    Tip Calculator

    🇦🇺 Australia version

Tipping in Australia is a choice, and most venues do not add a service charge. This version opens at 10% in dollars, with 5% and 15% buttons and a slider up to 20%. Prices already include GST, so you can enter the GST amount from a tax invoice to tip on the amount before tax, or leave it blank.

    Tipping in Australia

Most venues do not add a service charge, except sometimes for large groups. Tipping is always your choice.

    • Tipping is not expected in most venues (Tourism Australia).
    • At fine-dining restaurants it is common to tip about 10% for good service.
    • Restaurants and hotels generally do not add service charges to the bill.

    Australia rules and figures

    • Tourism Australia says tipping is not expected in most venues.
    • At fine-dining restaurants it is common to tip about 10% for good service.
    • Restaurants and hotels generally do not add service charges to the bill, though large groups are sometimes charged one.
    • GST is 10% of the price of most goods and services, and shelf prices include it.
    • A receipt for GST-free goods carries no GST line at all.

    How the tip calculator works

The tip is taken from the subtotal, which is the bill minus any GST amount you type in, and the total is the whole bill plus that tip. GST is 10% of the price, so on a bill that includes it the tax is one eleventh of the bill.

    GST in a price = price ÷ 11; tip = (bill − GST) × tip% ÷ 100; total = bill + tip

    • The tool opens at 10% and its buttons are 5%, 10% and 15%. Tourism Australia describes about 10% for good service at fine dining as common.
    • The star rating runs from Poor at 0% through Fair at 5%, Good at 10% and Great at 15% to Exceptional at 20%.
    • The Tax Amount (Optional) box is where a GST figure from a tax invoice goes; a plain restaurant bill needs nothing there.
    • Round Up lifts the tip to the next whole dollar and leaves the bill itself alone.
    • The currency starts as the Australian dollar and the custom split can share the total between diners.

How to use the tip calculator

    1. Enter the bill and tax. Type the total on the check. If the tip should exclude tax, type the tax line too and the tip is taken from the pre-tax subtotal.
    2. Choose a currency. Pick the currency whose symbol and decimals you want on the results. It starts as the country's own currency.
    3. Pick the tip percentage. Click a star rating, use a preset or the slider, or type a percentage and press Apply.
    4. Round the tip if you like. Switch on Round Up to lift the tip to the next whole currency unit.
    5. Copy or keep the numbers. Copy any figure with its button, download the receipt, or save the calculation to the history list.

Example: A $132.00 bill that includes $12.00 of GST

GST at 10% inside $132.00 is $12.00, so the subtotal is $120.00. A 10% tip is $12.00 and the total is $144.00. At 5% the tip is $6.00 and the total $138.00, and at 15% they are $18.00 and $150.00. Leaving the GST box empty tips on the full bill instead: $13.20, for a total of $145.20.

When to use the tip calculator

    • Tipping at a cafe or restaurant. Type the bill, keep the tip at 10% or lower it to 5%, and note the total before paying.
    • Tipping on a tax invoice. Enter the GST amount printed on the invoice to base the percentage on the price before tax.
    • Deciding whether to tip at all. Drag the slider to 0% to see the plain total when the service did not call for a tip.
    • Splitting a group meal. Use Equal Split or Custom Split to divide the total when a large group is charged a service fee.

What the tip calculator does not do

    • The 10% opening figure is a suggestion from this tool, and Tourism Australia sets no percentage.
    • GST is not worked out for you: the tool only subtracts the amount you type into the tax box.
    • Nothing is converted between currencies, and only the format changes.
    • The Apply box ignores 0, so use the slider to return to no tip.
    • History is kept in memory for the visit and disappears on reload.

When something else is a better fit

    • When everyone is paying the same share of a group meal, use the Tip and Bill Splitter.
    • When you want the GST inside a sale price, use the Discount Calculator, which separates tax from the price.
    • When you want official background on costs and customs for visitors, use the Tourism Australia travel tips page.

    Questions about the tip calculator

Do you have to tip in Australia?

No. Tourism Australia says tipping is not expected in most venues, and a tip of about 10% for good service is more common at fine-dining restaurants.

Is GST already in the price on the menu?

Yes, GST at 10% is included in shelf prices. On a $132.00 bill that means $12.00 is GST, which you can enter in the tax box to tip on $120.00.

Will a service charge be added to my bill?

Restaurants and hotels generally do not add service charges. Large groups are sometimes charged one, so read the bill before deciding on a tip.

What does the 0% star rating mean here?

Poor maps to a 0% tip, which fits a country where leaving nothing is normal. Fair is 5%, Good 10%, Great 15% and Exceptional 20%.

Why is the tip lower when I enter the GST?

The percentage applies to the amount before GST. On $132.00 at 10% the tip is $12.00 with the GST entered and $13.20 without it.
