# Water Intake Calculator

Australia's NHMRC sets adequate drink intakes at 2.6 L daily for men and 2.1 L daily for women, and this page uses them as your starting goal once gender is chosen. A weight-based target from activity and climate sits beside it, and every drink you log is counted by hydration value.

## Australia rules and figures

- For adults the NHMRC adequate intake of drinks is 2.6 L daily for men and 2.1 L daily for women, about 10 cups and 8 cups.
- Those NHMRC figures are for drinks only, such as water and milk. Adding food lifts total water to 3.4 L for men and 2.8 L for women.
- The goal on this page starts at the mid-point of 2.6 L and 2.1 L, which rounds to 2,350 ml, until a gender is chosen.
- The Australian page starts with weight in kilograms and shows volume in millilitres, with 70 kg as the sample weight.

## How the water intake calculator works

A recommended target begins at 35 mL per kilogram, then activity, climate, age, gender and special conditions scale it, up to a ceiling of 50 mL per kilogram. Your goal setting is separate and starts at the NHMRC figure for the gender chosen on the Settings tab, or at the mid-point until then.

Formula: `60 kg × 35 = 2,100 mL; × 1.1 (Light) × 1.3 (Hot) = 3,003 mL; ceiling = 60 × 50 = 3,000 mL, so the target is 3,000 mL`

- The NHMRC figures are for drinks only: 2.6 L for men and 2.1 L for women, about 10 cups and 8 cups.
- With no gender chosen the goal starts at the mid-point, 2,350 ml, and it moves to 2,600 ml or 2,100 ml once you pick male or female.
- Total water including food is higher at 3.4 L for men and 2.8 L for women, so a drink log alone is not expected to reach those.
- Each drink counts by hydration value, from 1.0 for water to 0.8 for coffee, 0.6 for soda and 0.3 for an alcoholic drink.
- Weight starts in kilograms and the volume unit is ml, and anything you change is kept for next time.

## How to use the water intake calculator

1. **Enter your profile.** On the Settings tab, give your weight in kilograms and choose a gender, which decides whether the goal starts at 2.6 L or 2.1 L. Age is optional.
2. **Choose activity and climate.** Both lists move the target. Pick Hot for a Queensland summer, or Cold for a cool day in Tasmania, as examples.
3. **Add what you drink.** Choose the drink, enter millilitres and press the add button. A quick-amount button saves typing.
4. **Compare with the guidance.** Open Goals to see the daily goal beside the calculated target, and press Use recommended to adopt the target instead.
5. **Check the factors.** Analysis shows the four reference amounts, and Factors Considered lists every step applied.

## Example: A 60 kg woman, Light activity, Hot climate

Her base is 2,100 mL, and Light activity with a Hot climate would stack to 3,003 mL. That is above her Max Safe of 3,000 mL (60 kg times 50), so the target is capped at 3,000 mL. In a Temperate climate it would be 2,310 mL. Her goal starts at 2,100 ml. Logging 500 ml water, 300 ml green tea and 250 ml coffee counts as 500 + 270 + 200 = 970 ml, or 46%.

## When to use the water intake calculator

- **Comparing with the NHMRC figure.** See how your weight-based target sits against 2.6 L or 2.1 L of drinks a day.
- **Planning for a hot day.** Switch Climate to Hot and Activity Level to Active to see how much extra the page suggests, up to your ceiling.
- **Counting tea, coffee and milk.** Log tea and coffee beside water and see the hydration-weighted total against the goal.
- **Seeing what a cap means.** Use a lower weight with high activity and a hot climate to watch the target stop at 50 mL per kilogram.

## What the water intake calculator does not do

- The NHMRC values are adequate intakes for healthy adults, not requirements, and they are for drinks only, so food is not counted.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding add 300 mL and 500 mL to the target but do not change the NHMRC starting goal. Ask your GP or midwife about your own needs.
- Streaks and weekly bars use the goal you have set now, not the goal from earlier days.
- Reminders show only while this page is open in a browser tab.
- A condition that affects fluids, such as heart or kidney disease, needs your GP's advice, which overrides any general formula.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you want a daily check-off with real streaks and history**, use the [Habit Tracker](https://aumnitools.com/tool/habit-tracker.md).
- **When you want calories and macro targets for the same profile**, use the [Calorie Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/calorie-calculator.md).
- **When you have a medical condition that affects fluids**, use your clinician's guidance, which overrides any general formula.

## Questions about the water intake calculator

### What does the NHMRC recommend for water?

Its adequate intake is 2.6 L of drinks daily for men and 2.1 L daily for women, about 10 and 8 cups. This page starts your goal from those amounts once gender is chosen.

### Does food count towards the goal?

The goal here is for drinks. NHMRC total water figures include water from food, 3.4 L for men and 2.8 L for women, so they are higher.

### Why was the target capped at 3,000 mL?

The activity and climate multipliers pushed it to 3,003 mL for 60 kg, above the ceiling of 50 mL per kilogram. The tool stops at 3,000 mL and notes it in Factors Considered.

### How much does a flat white count for?

Coffee is counted at 0.8, so 250 ml adds 200 ml of hydration to your total. Water counts in full, and soda counts at 0.6.

### Is the target medical advice?

No. It is a general estimate. If you take medicines, are pregnant or have a long-term condition, ask your GP how much fluid suits you.
