Auto Loan Calculator
🇨🇦 Canada version
In Canada the tax on a vehicle depends on the province, from 5% GST alone in Alberta to a combined 15% HST in the Atlantic provinces, and it is usually financed with the car. Pick a province and this calculator adds the tax, deducts the down payment and trade-in, and shows the payment, interest and five term options.

Vehicle & Loan Details
Banks must give the APR and the loan term when advertising a rate on a fixed-amount loan, and show the APR as prominently as the interest rate.
Ontario: HST 13% (5% federal + 8% provincial). The combined rate is used on the vehicle price.
Documentation, registration, etc.
Figures used
- Rate to compare: Annual percentage rate (APR) and cost of borrowing. Banks must give the APR and the loan term when advertising a rate on a fixed-amount loan, and show the APR as prominently as the interest rate.
- GST/HST: GST is 5% across Canada. Participating provinces charge HST instead; British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec add a separate provincial tax.
- FCAC: Information box examples (checked 2026-11-08)
- Consumer Measures Committee: Agreement for harmonization of cost of credit disclosure laws (checked 2026-11-08)

Canada rules and figures
- GST is 5% across Canada. Participating provinces charge HST instead; British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec add a separate provincial tax.
- Ontario charges 13% HST, Alberta 5% GST only, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15% HST. Nova Scotia is 14% since April 1, 2025.
- British Columbia is GST 5% plus PST 7%, Manitoba 5% plus 7%, and Saskatchewan 5% plus 6%. The provinces collect their own PST.
- Quebec charges 5% GST plus 9.975% QST, a combined 14.975%, and the QST is charged on the price before GST.
- An advertised rate on a fixed-amount loan has to come with the APR and the term, and the APR must stand out as much as the interest rate.
- Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories charge 5% GST with no territorial sales tax.

How the auto loan calculator works
The tool multiplies the vehicle price by the combined rate for the province you choose, adds fees, and subtracts the down payment and trade-in to find the amount financed. That sum is repaid in equal monthly payments, with interest worked out monthly at one twelfth of the yearly rate.
financed = price × (1 + provincial rate) + fees − down − trade-in; payment = financed × s × (1 + s)^months ÷ ((1 + s)^months − 1), s = rate ÷ 12
- The tax box fills in from the province list and can be overwritten with any rate you like.
- Its rate field reads Annual percentage rate (APR) and cost of borrowing (%), which stands for the disclosure banks must make on fixed-amount loans.
- Tax is applied to the vehicle price only, not to the fees, and is added to the loan rather than paid up front.
- The same combined rate is used for every province, including Quebec, where the real QST is charged on the price before GST.
- Total Cost adds all payments to the down payment and trade-in, so it includes tax, fees and interest.
How to use the auto loan calculator
- Enter price, down payment and trade-in. Type the vehicle price, then the cash you put down and the credit your old vehicle earns.
- Choose the province. Pick the province or territory where you will register the vehicle. The tax rate below it updates to the combined rate.
- Add the rate and term. Enter the APR from your offer and choose a term of 36 to 84 months.
- Enter fees. Add documentation and registration fees as one dollar amount.
- Read and compare. Check the payment and interest, then open Comparison to see every term.
Example: A $35,000 vehicle in Ontario with $3,000 down and a $5,000 trade-in at 6.9% over 72 months
Ontario's 13% HST adds $4,550. With $800 of fees, the $3,000 deposit and the $5,000 trade-in, $32,350 is financed. At $549.98 a month, interest comes to $7,248.80 and Total Cost reaches $47,598.80. The first payment carries $186.01 of interest, leaving $363.97 for principal. In Alberta, at 5% tax, only $29,550 is financed and the payment is $502.38 with $6,621.39 of interest.
When to use the auto loan calculator
- Comparing provinces. Switch the province to see how the tax changes the loan on the same vehicle.
- Choosing a term. Use Comparison to see how 48, 72 and 84 months trade payment against interest.
- Checking a dealer's payment. Rebuild the payment with tax, fees and APR to see whether the quote matches.
- Sizing a down payment. Raise the down payment to see the amount financed and the interest drop.
What the auto loan calculator does not do
- One combined tax rate is applied to the price. Rules that tax the net price after a trade-in, or charge Quebec's QST before GST, are not modelled.
- Interest is monthly. Some lenders compound or day-count differently, so the contract payment can vary by a few cents.
- Insurance, licence renewals, fuel and maintenance are left out of the cost.
- The results card vanishes if the down payment and trade-in already pay for everything, since no loan is left.
- The APR box is used as the loan's interest rate; the lender's own APR with fees may differ.
When something else is a better fit
- When you want to line up several lenders' loans, use the Loan Comparison Tool.
- When you plan to clear the loan ahead of schedule, use the Early Payoff Calculator.
- When you need the exact figures for your contract, use the information box your lender provides before you sign.
Questions about the auto loan calculator
How much tax is on a car in Ontario?
HST is 13%, so a $35,000 vehicle adds $4,550. In Alberta, GST alone at 5% adds $1,750, and in British Columbia the 12% total adds $4,200.
What is the payment on $32,350 over 72 months at 6.9%?

Is the tax financed or paid up front?
Here it is added to the loan. If you pay it in cash at signing, enter that amount in the down payment box to reduce what is financed.
Does Quebec work differently?
Yes. QST is 9.975% on the price before GST, which the tool does not model; it uses one combined 14.975% rate on the price.
What goes with a rate in a bank's loan ad?
The APR and the term appear together, with the APR shown as prominently as the interest rate.
