# Currency Converter

Canadian shoppers and cross-border travellers constantly compare their dollar with the US one. This converter opens on a Canadian-to-US dollar pair, loads daily rates on arrival, and flags when it has switched to a stored table.

## Canada rules and figures

- Canadian users begin with the Canadian dollar converting into the US dollar.
- Early 2024 is the date of the stored table, which has 1.35 Canadian dollars per US dollar and appears only as a fallback.
- Canadian tag prices exclude tax, which is added at the till at rates such as 5% GST in Alberta or 13% HST in Ontario.
- Quebec adds 9.975% QST to 5% GST, 14.975% in all.

## How the currency converter works

The tool divides your amount by the source currency figure and multiplies by the target figure, both measured per US dollar. For Canadian dollars to US dollars the second figure is 1.

Formula: `USD = CAD amount ÷ CAD per USD; Inverse Rate = CAD per USD`

- The default pair is CAD to USD, and the swap button reverses it.
- Daily rates appear in the badge when the fetch works, and Built-in table (early 2024) when it does not.
- The stored table lists 1.35 Canadian dollars per US dollar, so 900.00 CAD becomes 666.67 USD there.
- The Compare tab lists the figure for every currency against USD.
- Add to History records each conversion in the page.

## How to use the currency converter

1. **Enter an amount.** Type the amount in the Amount box. The default is 100, and the Quick Conversions grid lists eight preset amounts for the same pair.
2. **Choose the currencies.** Pick the From and To currencies from the menus; use the arrow button between them to swap the pair. Until you pick, From is your country's currency.
3. **Read the result.** The Conversion Result card shows the converted amount, the exchange rate and its inverse. The Copy button puts the line on the clipboard; the line under the card shows when the rates were updated.
4. **Keep or compare pairs.** Add to History records the conversion, Add to Favorites keeps the pair, and the Compare tab lists every currency's rate against USD.
5. **Do arithmetic first.** On the Calculator tab, use the keypad, then press Use in Converter to send the result to the Amount box.

## Example: 900.00 CAD to US dollars from the stored table

These figures come from the fallback table and are not a current rate. Dividing 900.00 CAD by the table's 1.35 Canadian dollars per US dollar gives 666.67 USD. The two rate lines would then read 1 CAD = 0.740741 USD and 1 USD = 1.350000 CAD. When daily rates load, the provider's own numbers replace them and the result changes.

## When to use the currency converter

- **Shopping at a US retailer.** Convert the US price into Canadian dollars before shipping and duty.
- **Planning a drive across the border.** Convert a trip budget and read the Quick Conversions amounts.
- **Checking a US salary or contract.** Enter the US dollar figure and read it in Canadian dollars.
- **Adding tax after converting.** Convert a pre-tax price, then use the Discount Calculator for provincial tax.

## What the currency converter does not do

- Rates are daily mid-market figures and not a card network rate.
- The early-2024 fallback may be well out of date.
- The tool lists 14 currencies and two cryptocurrencies.
- No sales tax or duty is added.
- Bank spreads are not shown.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you are paying with a card or wire**, use the rate your card issuer or bank quotes.
- **When you want to travel with local prices in mind**, use the [Travel Currency Converter](https://aumnitools.com/tool/travel-currency-converter.md).
- **When you need provincial tax on a converted price**, use the [Discount Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/discount-calculator.md).

## Questions about the currency converter

### What does the Canadian page start with?

It starts converting CAD into USD. Pick either menu to override that.

### Why does a badge say Built-in table?

The fetch failed, so the tool uses a table of approximate early-2024 rates, which can be far from current ones.

### How do I convert CAD to USD by hand?

Divide by the stored CAD figure per USD. At 1.35, 900.00 CAD gives 666.67 USD.

### Does the converted amount include tax?

Only if the original price did. Canadian tag prices usually exclude tax, so add the provincial rate separately.

### Why will my bank differ?

The page shows a mid-market daily rate. Banks and cards add a margin or a fee.
