    Fuel Cost Calculator

    🇨🇦 Canada version

Canadian cars list fuel use in litres per 100 km and stations post prices in dollars per litre, even though many drivers still think in miles for long trips. This page starts in kilometres, fills in the national average price for regular gasoline from Statistics Canada, and compares as many vehicles as you list.

    Canada rules and figures

    • Canadian pumps sell fuel by the litre and new-car labels quote litres per 100 km, so the tool starts in kilometres with those units.
    • Statistics Canada reported an average regular unleaded self-serve price of 1.843 per litre across Canada for September 2026.
    • Natural Resources Canada’s Fuel Consumption Guide is the national source for the L/100 km ratings of new vehicles.
    • Federal GST is 5%, and some provinces add HST or a separate PST on top, so local pump prices differ from the national average.

How the fuel cost calculator works

Litres per 100 km is multiplied by distance, driving style and conditions, then by the price per litre. Statistics Canada reports a monthly national average, which is only a starting point because provinces and cities differ.

    litres = L/100 km × style × conditions × km ÷ 100; cost = litres × price per litre; CO₂ = litres × 2.31 kg for petrol

    • The default trip is 500 km for 2 people: Our car at 7.5 L/100 km, The big one at 11.5 L/100 km, both at 1.843 per litre, the September 2026 average for regular unleaded, self-serve.
    • Statistics Canada publishes a monthly average, so the starting price is dated to the month and not to a single day.
    • Pick Units if you want miles and US or imperial gallons: the fuel economy converts through litres per 100 km, so nothing is double counted.
    • The EV row starts at 17 kWh per 100 km and a placeholder 0.30 per kWh. Cold winters raise consumption, which the conditions box approximates with a 1.12 factor.

How to use the fuel cost calculator

    1. Start with kilometres. Canada opens in kilometres, litres and L/100 km. Use Units to switch to miles when planning a US road trip.
    2. Add the distance and crew. Type the kilometres and People in the car, and press Return trip for a round trip such as a weekend at the cottage.
    3. Compare your vehicles. Open Compare vehicles and edit each economy figure. The September average price is already in each fuel box.
    4. Reflect winter and load. Choose Cold weather under Conditions and a heavier style if you are towing a trailer or carrying a roof box.
    5. See the yearly effect. Set Trips like this per year, then read the saving and the CO₂ avoided by choosing the cheapest vehicle.

Example: 500 km at the September 2026 average of 1.843 a litre

A 500 km trip in Our car at 7.5 L/100 km uses 37.5 litres. Using the Statistics Canada September 2026 average for regular unleaded of 1.843 per litre, fuel comes to $69.11, which is $34.56 each for 2 passengers and 86.6 kg of CO₂. The big one at 11.5 L/100 km burns 57.5 litres for $105.97. The electric vehicle needs 85.0 kWh at 0.30, which is $25.50, a gap of $80.47.

When to use the fuel cost calculator

    • Toronto to Montreal. Enter the distance and the number of people sharing, and read what each person owes toward gas on the 401.
    • Cottage weekends. Use Return trip with the lake distance and see how much a summer of weekend runs adds up to through trips per year.
    • Winter driving. Switch conditions to cold weather to see how many extra litres sub-zero days could add to the same route.
    • Comparing a truck and a hybrid sedan. List both at their L/100 km figures from the fuel consumption label and compare the yearly gap.

What the fuel cost calculator does not do

    • The style and condition factors are rough multipliers applied equally to every vehicle. They are not measurements of your car.
    • Costs cover fuel or electricity only: no tolls, parking, wear, depreciation or charging losses beyond the consumption you enter.
    • Each vehicle has one fuel price and the CO₂ figures are tailpipe estimates from fixed constants, with a single grid intensity for all electric vehicles.
    • The cost split between passengers is always equal, and hybrids and plug-ins are not modelled.
    • Settings are not saved; reloading restores the three starting vehicles. The built-in pump price is a national average from an official page on the date shown, not the price at your station, and some countries have no single published average, in which case you enter it.

When something else is a better fit

    • When you do not know the distance yet and need a straight-line or road estimate, use the Distance Calculator.
    • When you want fuel as one line in a whole trip budget, use the Trip Planner.
    • When you need real consumption for a particular route and load, use your car's trip computer or a full-tank fill-up record.

Questions about the fuel cost calculator

Where does the 1.843 price come from?

It is Statistics Canada’s average retail price for regular unleaded gasoline, self-serve, across Canada for September 2026. A monthly national average will differ from your station, so overwrite it with what you pay.

What does 500 km cost at 7.5 L/100 km?

37.5 litres and $69.11 at the starting price. With two people in the car that is $34.56 each, and the CO₂ is 86.6 kg.

Can I enter miles per gallon?

Yes. Pick a unit set with mpg in Units and the typed economy converts through litres per 100 km. Be careful which gallon you use: a US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon 4.546.

How much does cold weather add?

The Conditions box multiplies fuel use by 1.12 under 5 °C. For the 7.5 L/100 km car on 500 km that raises 37.5 litres to 42.0, or about $77.41.

Does the EV figure include a winter range loss?

Only through the conditions multiplier, which applies the same factor to every vehicle. For a winter figure, raise the kWh per 100 km to what your car shows in cold weather instead.
