    Invoice Generator

    🇨🇦 Canada version

Sales tax on a Canadian invoice depends on the province: some charge a single HST, others charge GST with a provincial tax beside it, and some charge GST only. This generator opens in Ontario at 13% HST, lets you pick any province or territory, and shows GST and PST, RST or QST on separate lines where they apply.

    Canada rules and figures

    • GST is 5% across Canada. Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island charge a single HST of 13%, 15%, 15%, 14% and 15% respectively.
    • British Columbia charges GST 5% plus PST 7%, Manitoba GST 5% plus RST 7% and Saskatchewan GST 5% plus PST 6%. Each provincial part is collected by the province.
    • Quebec charges GST 5% plus QST 9.975%, a combined 14.975%. Revenu Québec collects the QST, which is charged on the price before GST.
    • Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge GST of 5% and no territorial or provincial sales tax.
    • The business number box is labelled Business number (BN), and the page defaults to Ontario at 13% until you choose another province.

    How the invoice generator works

Quantity times rate gives each line, the discount comes off the subtotal, and the combined rate for your province is charged on the rest. Where a provincial tax exists the tax line splits into GST at 5% and the provincial part.

tax = (subtotal − discount) × combined rate; GST = 5% of that base; provincial tax = tax − GST

    • The province menu is labelled Province or territory and starts at Ontario. Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island show one HST line; Alberta and the three territories show GST only.
    • British Columbia and Saskatchewan show GST plus PST, Manitoba shows GST plus RST and Quebec shows GST plus QST, each as its own line on the PDF and the preview.
    • The rates come from the CRA's GST/HST rate page: 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, 14% in Nova Scotia, 12% in British Columbia and Manitoba, 11% in Saskatchewan, 14.975% in Quebec and 5% elsewhere.
    • Typing your own number in the tax rate box replaces the province rate and shows a single line, because the split no longer applies.
    • The business number box is labelled Business number (BN). Currency opens as CAD, dates run year, month, day, and the draft is saved in your browser.

How to use the invoice generator

    1. Pick the province. Choose the province or territory that decides the tax. The tax rate box updates to the combined rate.
    2. Enter your business number and the client. Put your business number in your own block, then fill in who you are billing.
    3. Add items and a discount. Add each charge with a description, quantity and rate, and set any discount in percent.
    4. Read the tax lines and save. The preview lists the tax lines for the province. Download the PDF or copy the text.

Example: The same invoice in British Columbia and Ontario

Two lines, 40 hours at $75 and 12 units at $45.50, make $3,546.00. A 10% discount of $354.60 leaves $3,191.40. In British Columbia the 12% total is $382.97, shown as GST $159.57 and PST $223.40, for $3,574.37. In Ontario 13% HST is $414.88, for a total of $3,606.28.

When to use the invoice generator

    • Billing a client in another province. Switch the province to see how the same work changes between an HST province and a GST-plus-PST one.
    • Showing GST and QST separately. Choose Quebec so the PDF carries two tax lines instead of one combined figure.
    • Alberta or territory work. Pick one of those and the invoice shows GST at 5% alone.
    • Checking a supplier's tax split. Enter their lines and discount and compare each tax line with theirs.

What the invoice generator does not do

    • Rates are for the province you pick as the place of supply. The tool does not decide which province applies to a sale.
    • One rate covers all lines. Zero-rated or exempt lines need their own invoice.
    • Typing a custom rate drops the GST and provincial split and shows one tax line.
    • Prices are treated as tax-excluded, and the business number is printed as typed.
    • Currency changes only the symbol, so CAD is not converted to another currency.
    • No legal wording, registration check or French-language version is included.

When something else is a better fit

    • When you must file GST/HST returns and invoice regularly, use accounting software that tracks input tax credits.
    • When you want income tax and take-home pay for a salary, use the Tax Calculator.
    • When you want to try out a price cut before quoting, use the Discount Calculator.

    Questions about the invoice generator

Which tax lines appear for each province?

HST provinces show one HST line. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec show GST at 5% and then PST, RST or QST. Alberta and the territories show GST only.

How is the Quebec total worked out?

The combined rate is 14.975%. On $3,191.40 that is $477.92 tax, shown as GST $159.57 and QST $318.35.

What does the tool start with?

Ontario at 13% HST, in Canadian dollars. Choose another province from the Province or territory menu and the rate changes with it.

Can I enter a different tax rate?

Yes. Type it in the rate box. The tool then prints a single tax line and no longer splits GST from the provincial part.

Where does the business number go?

In the Business number (BN) box under From (Your Information). The PDF prints it under your address as typed.
