    Tip Calculator

    🇨🇦 Canada version

Restaurant tips in Canada are about 15%, and the tax is added to the bill at the till, so the question is what the percentage should be taken from. This version opens at 15%, offers 15%, 18% and 20% buttons, and subtracts the GST, HST or PST line you enter so the tip is based on the pre-tax meal price.

    Tipping in Canada

Tips are normally left on top of the bill; a service charge is not described in the Canada.ca guide. Check your bill.

    • The usual tip is about 15% of the bill (Government of Canada newcomer guide).
    • All tips and gratuities are taxable income and must be reported on the tax return.
    • Quebec is the only province that requires employees to declare tips to their employer.

    Canada rules and figures

    • According to the federal newcomer guide, a typical tip is about 15% of the bill.
    • The CRA treats every tip and gratuity as taxable income to be reported on the return.
    • Quebec is the only province that requires employees to declare tips to their employer.
    • GST is 5% across Canada, and Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge no further sales tax.
    • Ontario charges 13% HST, British Columbia 12% with PST, and Quebec 14.975% with QST, rates in force from 1 April 2025.
    • Tips are normally left on top of the bill, and the Canada.ca guide does not describe a service charge.

Sources: Canada.ca: Money (settle in Canada) (checked 2026-11-08); CRA: Tips and gratuities (checked 2026-11-08); CRA: GST/HST calculator (and rates) (checked 2026-11-08)

    How the tip calculator works

The tip comes from the subtotal, which is the bill less the tax you enter, and the total is the full bill plus the tip. Tax is charged by province on top of menu prices, so the tax line on the receipt is the number to type.

    tip = (bill − tax) × tip% ÷ 100; total = bill + tip; Ontario example: $60.00 × 13% = $7.80 tax

    • The opening tip is 15%, matching the figure in the Government of Canada newcomer guide, and the slider runs to 30%.
    • The star ratings are Poor 0%, Fair 15%, Good 18%, Great 20% and Exceptional 25%, so the opening tip sits on two stars.
    • Tax varies by province: GST is 5% federally, Ontario charges 13% HST, and Quebec adds QST to GST for 14.975% in all.
    • Round Up raises the tip to a whole dollar and leaves the bill as printed.
    • The currency starts as the Canadian dollar, and a custom split lets each diner enter their own amount.

How to use the tip calculator

    1. Enter the bill and tax. Type the total on the check. If the tip should exclude tax, type the tax line too and the tip is taken from the pre-tax subtotal.
    2. Choose a currency. Pick the currency whose symbol and decimals you want on the results. It starts as the country's own currency.
    3. Pick the tip percentage. Click a star rating, use a preset or the slider, or type a percentage and press Apply.
    4. Round the tip if you like. Switch on Round Up to lift the tip to the next whole currency unit.
    5. Copy or keep the numbers. Copy any figure with its button, download the receipt, or save the calculation to the history list.

Example: An Ontario meal of $60.00 plus 13% HST

HST at 13% on $60.00 is $7.80, so the bill is $67.80. With the tax entered, a 15% tip is $9.00 and the total is $76.80. At 18% the tip is $10.80 for $78.60, and at 20% it is $12.00 for $79.80. Without the tax figure the 15% tip would be $10.17, for $77.97.

When to use the tip calculator

    • Tipping before tax. Enter the HST or GST line from the receipt so the tip does not include tax.
    • Comparing 15% with 20%. Press each button and read the difference in dollars for the same meal.
    • Checking an out-of-province bill. Type the tax shown in Quebec or British Columbia to see how a higher combined rate changes the total.
    • Splitting a table. Use Custom Split to share the total in proportion to what each person ordered.

What the tip calculator does not do

    • Tax is entered by hand, so the tool does not pick a province or compute the rate for you.
    • Tips are suggestions, and no Canadian law sets a percentage.
    • A venue that adds a service charge is not described in the Canada.ca guide, so check the receipt yourself.
    • The Apply box ignores 0, so use the slider for a no-tip total.
    • Receipts and history are kept in memory only for the current visit.

When something else is a better fit

    • When everyone pays an equal share, use the Tip and Bill Splitter.
    • When you want to see provincial tax added to a sale price, use the Discount Calculator.
    • When you need to know how tips count as income, use the CRA page on tips and gratuities.

    Questions about the tip calculator

How much do you tip in Canada?

The Government of Canada newcomer guide gives about 15% of the bill as the usual tip. This calculator opens at 15% and goes up to 30%.

    Should the tip include tax?

That is your choice. On $67.80 with $7.80 tax, 15% of the pre-tax subtotal is $9.00, while 15% of the whole bill is $10.17.

Why do tax rates differ between provinces?

GST is 5% everywhere, and some provinces charge HST instead or add PST or QST. Ontario is 13% HST, British Columbia 12% with PST and Quebec 14.975%.

    Are tips taxable in Canada?

Yes. The CRA counts them as taxable income to be reported, and Quebec adds a duty for employees to declare tips to their employer.

What does Round Up do to a Canadian bill?

It raises only the tip to the next whole dollar: $9.00 becomes $9.00, so the total is $76.80.
