# Water Intake Calculator

Health Canada lists adequate intakes of total water at 3.7 L a day for men and 2.7 L for women, counting drinking water, other drinks and the water in food. This page starts your goal there and adds a weight-based target in millilitres and a log that weights each drink.

## Canada rules and figures

- Health Canada gives adequate intakes of total water of 3.7 L a day for men and 2.7 L for women, the same as the US Dietary Reference Intakes.
- These figures cover total water, meaning drinking water, other drinks and the water in food, not drinks alone.
- Before a gender is chosen, this page starts the goal at the mid-point of the two figures, 3,200 ml.
- The Canadian page begins with weight in pounds and volumes in millilitres, with 150 lb as the sample weight.

## How the water intake calculator works

Your weight-based target begins from 35 mL for every kilogram, is adjusted for activity, climate and other settings, and is capped at 50 mL per kilogram. The daily goal is a separate setting, which starts at the Health Canada figure for the gender chosen, or at the mid-point of the two.

Formula: `68.04 kg × 35 = 2,381 mL; × 1.25 (Moderate) × 1.0 (Temperate) = 2,977 mL; Max Safe = 68.04 × 50 = 3,402 mL`

- Weight starts in pounds on the Canadian page, so 150 lb is used as 68.04 kg, and a switch to kg or stones is available.
- The Health Canada figures count total water, so food supplies part of it and a drink log on its own may fall short without that being a problem.
- Before a gender is chosen the goal sits at the mid-point of 3,700 and 2,700 ml, which is 3,200 ml.
- Hydration values scale each drink: water 1.0, herbal tea 0.95, green tea 0.9, coffee 0.8, soda 0.6 and an alcoholic drink 0.3.
- Volumes are in millilitres, and logs are stored in ml.

## How to use the water intake calculator

1. **Enter your weight and gender.** On Settings, type weight in pounds and pick a gender. Gender chooses between the 3.7 L and 2.7 L starting goals.
2. **Set activity and climate.** Pick the level that fits your week and the weather you live in. A Canadian winter might be Cold, and a prairie July Hot.
3. **Log drinks.** Choose a beverage, type the amount in millilitres and add it. Each entry counts by its hydration value.
4. **Review the numbers.** Analysis shows the minimum, recommended, optimal and maximum safe amounts, and Factors Considered lists what changed them.
5. **Adopt or export.** Use recommended on the Goals tab replaces your goal with the calculated target. Export Data saves your log.

## Example: A 150 lb woman, Moderate activity, Temperate climate

At 68.04 kg the base is 2,381 mL, so Moderate activity gives a Recommended 2,977 mL. Minimum is 2,041 mL, Optimal 3,274 mL and Max Safe 3,402 mL. Her goal starts at the 2.7 L total-water figure, 2,700 ml. Logging two 500 ml waters and a 250 ml coffee counts as 500 + 500 + 200 = 1,200 ml, which is 44% of that goal.

## When to use the water intake calculator

- **Reading the total-water figure.** Compare your own target with 3.7 L or 2.7 L and see how much of it might come from food.
- **Winter and summer targets.** Switch Climate between Cold and Hot to see how far the target moves through the year.
- **Counting mixed drinks.** Log water, tea and coffee together and watch the hydration-weighted total.
- **Training weeks.** Raise Activity Level for a heavy week and log sports drinks and water against the new target.

## What the water intake calculator does not do

- The Health Canada values are adequate intakes of total water for healthy adults, so a log of drinks alone can sit below them without being a concern.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding add to the calculated target but do not change the goal that starts from Health Canada's figure. Ask your doctor about your needs.
- Streaks and weekly bars use the goal you have now, and reminders only appear while the page is open.
- Medical conditions that change fluid needs, such as heart or kidney disease, are for your doctor to advise on.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you want a daily check-off with real streaks and history**, use the [Habit Tracker](https://aumnitools.com/tool/habit-tracker.md).
- **When you want calories and macro targets for the same profile**, use the [Calorie Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/calorie-calculator.md).
- **When you have a medical condition that affects fluids**, use your clinician's guidance, which overrides any general formula.

## Questions about the water intake calculator

### What does Health Canada say about daily water?

It lists adequate intakes of total water of 3.7 L for men and 2.7 L for women a day. Total water includes drinking water, other drinks and the water in food.

### Why is my drink log below 2.7 L?

The figure counts food as well as drinks, so a drinks-only log is expected to be lower. Compare the log with the calculated target if you want a drinks-based number.

### Can I enter weight in kilograms?

Yes. A small list above the weight box offers kg, lb and stones, and the tool remembers the unit you choose.

### How is the Recommended 2,977 mL reached?

It is 68.04 kg times 35 mL, then times 1.25 for Moderate activity. A Temperate climate leaves it unchanged, and no gender multiplier applies to a woman.

### Does this replace my doctor's advice?

No. The page uses general multipliers. If you take medicines or have a condition that affects fluid balance, ask your doctor how much to drink.
