# Work Hours Calculator

Overtime in Canada depends on where you work: Ontario starts after 44 hours a week, British Columbia counts daily hours and adds double time past 12, and federally regulated workplaces use a daily and weekly test. Pick the federal rule or a province, enter your week, and the calculator splits the hours and prices them in dollars.

## Canada rules and figures

- Ontario pays overtime at 1.5 times after 44 hours a week, with no daily test in this tool's data.
- British Columbia counts overtime after 8 hours a day or 40 a week at 1.5 times, with double time after 12 hours in a day.
- Federally regulated workplaces use 8 hours a day or 40 a week, and generally 48 hours a week at most unless a permit, averaging or emergency rule applies.
- New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador set the minimum overtime rate at 1.5 times the minimum wage.
- Many jobs are exempt or have different thresholds, such as managers, trucking, farming and construction, and collective agreements can pay more.

## How the Work Hours Calculator works

Net time for each day is finish minus start minus the unpaid break. The rule you choose sets the daily and weekly thresholds and the multiplier. Selecting a different jurisdiction loads its own thresholds back in.

Formula: `net minutes = (out − in, +24 h if out < in) − break; pay = regular × rate + overtime × rate × 1.5 + double time × rate × 2`

- The jurisdiction menu is called Federal or provincial rule and starts on Federally regulated: overtime after 8 hours a day or 40 a week at 1.5 times. Where both tests apply, the greater overtime total is used.
- Ontario is weekly only, after 44 hours, at 1.5 times. Alberta uses 8 a day or 44 a week, Quebec 40 a week, Nova Scotia 48 a week, and British Columbia 8 a day, 40 a week and double time after 12 a day.
- New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, set the minimum overtime rate at 1.5 times the minimum wage, not the worker's own rate, so the tool's multiplier is only an approximation there.
- Prince Edward Island moved from 48 to 44 hours under a new Employment Standards Act set to start on 30 June 2026.
- The default target is 40 hours, currency opens as $, and the timesheet is saved in your browser.

## How to use the Work Hours Calculator

1. **Choose where the job is.** Open the pay tab and pick the federal rule or the province. Thresholds and the multiplier change to match.
2. **Enter the week.** Type start, finish and unpaid break for each day worked.
3. **Set the hourly rate.** Enter the base rate. The overtime rule and multiplier are already filled from the jurisdiction.
4. **Check the thresholds.** Adjust the daily, weekly or double-time hours if your job type or agreement differs from the general rule.
5. **Try a single shift.** The shift tab totals one shift from its start, finish and break.

## Example: Five 09:00 to 18:30 days in Ontario and in British Columbia

Each day is 9.5 hours less a 30-minute break, so 9 hours, and the week is 45. At a base rate of $28 in Ontario, 44 hours are regular and 1 hour is overtime: 44 × $28 = $1,232.00 plus 1 × $42.00, a gross of $1,274.00. In British Columbia each day has 1 hour past 8, so 40 regular hours pay $1,120.00 and 5 overtime hours pay $210.00, a gross of $1,330.00. The federal rule gives the same $1,330.00.

## When to use the Work Hours Calculator

- **Comparing provinces for the same week.** Switch the jurisdiction and watch regular and overtime hours move.
- **Checking a pay stub.** Enter hours as worked and compare overtime with what was paid.
- **Long days in British Columbia.** Enter a 13-hour day to see double time past 12 hours.
- **Federal workplaces.** Use the federal rule for banks, airlines and other federally regulated work.

## What the Work Hours Calculator does not do

- Pay is gross, before income tax, CPP, EI and other deductions.
- The provincial rules were read through government summaries. Check your province for your own job type.
- Exemptions for managers, trucking, farming and construction are not modelled.
- Public holiday pay, averaging agreements and overtime banks are not applied.
- For New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador the minimum-wage basis of overtime is not computed.
- On the shift tab, hours are paid at the base rate and no overtime is worked out.
