# Body Fat Calculator

Body fat sits differently at the same BMI for many Asian adults, which is why ICMR-NIN uses lower cut-offs. This calculator opens in centimetres and kilograms and estimates body fat from neck, waist and height with the US Navy equation, adding hips for women. The categories are not Indian ones, so a doctor should interpret the result.

## India rules and figures

- ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 put overweight at a BMI of 23 to 27.4 and obesity from 27.5, with Normal from 18.5 to 22.9.
- The ICMR-NIN guideline applies its cut-offs to every Indian adult, its stated reason being higher body fat at a given BMI among Asians.
- Metric is the starting unit system on the Indian page, with weight in kilograms and every tape reading in centimetres.
- The sections of the ICMR-NIN guideline checked give no BMI cut-offs for children, so treat any child's result with caution.

## How the body fat calculator works

The Navy equation uses tape readings in centimetres, and weight only produces the BMI shown beside the percentage.

Formula: `F = 495 ÷ (k1 − k2·log10(x) + k3·log10(height)) − 450. For men x = waist − neck; for women x = waist + hip − neck, with different k values`

- Metric is the starting unit system for India, so the boxes expect kilograms and centimetres, and Imperial is a selection away.
- Men in their 30s see an 11-17% range and women in their 30s see 15-23%, shown only once an age is typed.
- The BMI beside the percentage is weight divided by height squared. Read it against the ICMR-NIN bands, where overweight begins at 23.
- The Navy equation was not built from Indian data, and the page does not alter it for ethnicity.

## How to use the body fat calculator

1. **Choose gender and Metric.** Pick Male or Female. Women also enter hips. Leave Unit System on Metric for centimetres.
2. **Add your age.** Age is optional and only decides which range text appears beside the result.
3. **Enter the three tape readings.** Record neck, waist and, for women, hip circumference in centimetres, keeping the tape level.
4. **Check the categories.** The Categories tab lists the bands the page uses for each sex, and the Guide tab covers tape placement.
5. **Copy the figures.** Copy Results gives plain text you can share with a doctor.

## Example: 172 cm man and 158 cm woman, age 38 and 33

Typing 172 cm, 72 kg, neck 36 and waist 88 for a man of 38 gives 21.2%, Average, an 11-17% range and a BMI of 24.3, which sits in the ICMR-NIN Overweight band. For a woman of 33 with 158 cm, 60 kg, neck 31, waist 80 and hip 96, the page shows 32.9%, labelled Obese by its own bands, a 15-23% range and BMI 24.0.

## When to use the body fat calculator

- **Checking BMI against body fat.** See whether a BMI in the Overweight band comes with a body fat estimate in the Average or Obese band.
- **Watching a waist change.** Enter a new waist reading each month with the same neck and height to see the percentage move.
- **Collecting numbers for a doctor.** Copy the estimate, category and BMI to take to a consultation.

## What the body fat calculator does not do

- The Navy equation estimates from tape readings and was not validated on Indian adults by this page.
- Body fat categories and age ranges are the same in every country and are not from ICMR-NIN.
- A heavy but muscular person may get a lower percentage than BMI suggests, and the reverse can also happen.
- The page does not give a diagnosis, and a doctor should interpret the estimate.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you want to save your tape readings by date**, use the [Body Measurement Tracker](https://aumnitools.com/tool/body-measurement-tracker.md), which stores dated entries.
- **When you want a category from the ICMR-NIN Asian BMI cut-offs**, use the [BMI Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/bmi-calculator.md).
- **When you want a measured figure or personal advice**, use a doctor, who can arrange a body composition scan if it is needed.

## Questions about the body fat calculator

### Is the BMI shown here read with Indian cut-offs?

The number is plain weight divided by height squared. You can compare it with the ICMR-NIN bands, where Normal is 18.5 to 22.9, overweight 23 to 27.4 and obesity from 27.5.

### Why is 32.9% labelled Obese?

The page labels a woman's result Obese from 32% upward, using its own bands. These are not ICMR-NIN categories, so a doctor should say what the figure means for you.

### Do I need hip size?

Only for the women's equation. If Female is selected and the hip box is empty, no result is shown. Men can leave it blank because their equation uses neck, waist and height.

### What units should I use?

Metric: kilograms for weight and centimetres for height, neck, waist and hip. Imperial is available, in which case the page asks for pounds and inches and converts them first.
