Convert between cups, spoons, millilitres, grams and ounces — with real ingredient densities, so a cup of flour and a cup of honey do not weigh the same.

    What are you converting?

The recipe cup here is the 250 mL metric cup. The katori (about 200 mL, ICMR-NIN) is a separate unit in the lists below.

    India rules and figures

    • ICMR-NIN uses a 200 millilitre medium katori or cup in its dietary guidelines, and notes that katori sizes vary from 115 to 360 millilitres.
    • The guidelines give spoons as 15 grams and 5 grams, which this tool takes as 15 millilitres and 5 millilitres.
    • No official Indian pint or fluid ounce was found, so only millilitres, litres, cups, katori and spoons are listed as local units.
    • Home ovens in India are usually set in Celsius, so the temperature tab opens in Celsius with gas mark and fan values.

How the Cooking Unit Converter works

Volume is held in millilitres, weight in grams, and ingredient density turns one into the other. The katori is just a 200 mL volume unit alongside the cup and spoons, so it converts by ratio like any other.

    grams = millilitres × (grams per US cup ÷ 236.588); katori = mL ÷ 200

    • The local measures are a 15 mL tablespoon, a 5 mL teaspoon, a 200 mL katori and, by default, the 250 mL metric cup. No official Indian pint or fluid ounce was found, so none is listed.
    • A 200 mL katori of basmati rice at 180 g per US cup weighs 152.2 g, and a 250 mL cup of it weighs 190.2 g.
    • Dry lentils at 192 g per US cup come to 162.3 g in a 200 mL katori. Table salt at 288 g per US cup is 6.1 g in a 5 mL teaspoon.
    • Switch Cup standard if a recipe from abroad uses US cups. The tool converts through millilitres, so the sizes are not confused.

How to use the Cooking Unit Converter

    1. Enter how much. Type the amount from the recipe, such as 2 katori, in the Amount box.
    2. Pick katori or cup. Choose the katori, cup or spoon in From and a weight or millilitres in To. The katori is listed among the Indian kitchen measures.
    3. Choose rice, dal or flour. Select the Ingredient from the 50 listed, since a katori of dal weighs more than a katori of flour.
    4. Check the weights tab. Open Ingredient weights and use Search ingredients to find, say, basmati rice per cup and per tablespoon.
    5. Set an oven. On Oven temperature type degrees in Celsius for a baking recipe and read Fahrenheit, gas mark and the fan setting.

Example: Rice, dal and salt in katori and spoon measures

A 200 mL katori of basmati rice weighs 152.2 g, and a 250 mL cup of it 190.2 g. A katori of dry lentils weighs 162.3 g. A 5 mL teaspoon of table salt is 6.1 g. For baking, 180 °C is 356 °F, gas mark 4, and 160 °C if you use the fan.

When to use the Cooking Unit Converter

    • Scaling a family recipe. Turn katori of rice and dal into grams so the dish can be cooked with a kitchen scale or doubled accurately.
    • Following a US baking blog. Convert American cups of flour and sugar into grams using the US customary cup.
    • Checking a diet plan. Convert the grams in a nutrition plan into katori and spoons you already own.
    • Setting a convection oven. Enter the recipe’s Celsius temperature and read the fan setting 20 degrees lower.

What the Cooking Unit Converter does not do

    • Ingredient weights are fixed single figures, mostly spooned-and-levelled. A packed cup of flour can weigh 20% more, so use them as a starting point.
    • Only 50 ingredients are listed. Anything else, such as grated carrot or chopped onion, needs a weight from the packaging.
    • The fan-oven setting is a flat reduction of 20 °C. Some ovens and recipes call for 25 °C.
    • Volume units cover US, imperial, Australian and Indian katori sizes only; Japanese cups and metric spoons beyond the listed ones are absent. A pint or fluid ounce is not offered as a local unit in countries with no official size.
    • The converter does not scale a recipe or change cooking times.

When something else is a better fit

    • When you want to scale a whole recipe for more or fewer servings, use the Recipe Scaler.
    • When you need general length, weight or temperature conversion, use the Unit Converter.
    • When you need exact weights for baking science, use a kitchen scale and the weights printed by the recipe's author.

Questions about the Cooking Unit Converter

How big is a katori in millilitres?

The tool uses 200 mL, the medium katori in ICMR-NIN guidelines. Real katori range from 115 to 360 mL, so measure your own with water and enter the result as an amount in millilitres if it differs.

How many grams of basmati rice are in a katori?

152.2 g for a 200 mL katori, from 180 g per US customary cup. A 250 mL cup holds 190.2 g. Rice rinsed or packed down will weigh a little more.

What is a tablespoon in India?

The tool takes a tablespoon as 15 mL and a teaspoon as 5 mL, following the 15 g and 5 g spoons in ICMR-NIN guidance. Spoons from your own kitchen set may vary a little.

    Which cup standard applies?

The 250 mL metric cup is selected by default, and the 200 mL katori is separate. Switch Cup standard to US customary (236.588 mL) when following an American recipe.

    Does it convert oven temperatures?

Yes. At 180 °C it shows 356 °F, gas mark 4 and 160 °C for a fan oven. Type Fahrenheit values too, such as 350, to get Celsius.
