Discount Calculator
🇮🇳 India version
An Indian MRP includes GST, so a discount, a coupon and the tax slab all act on one number. This calculator takes each offer from the running price in rupees, shows the true combined saving, and breaks the final price down for the slab you choose, showing the net amount and the GST.

Discount Calculator
Stack discounts in the order a till applies them, work backwards from a sale price, convert any multi-buy into a real percentage, and compare pack sizes on unit price.
Price and discounts
Examples: cement, TVs, air conditioners, small cars, motorcycles up to 350 cc, most other goods and services.
The tax contained in a GST-inclusive price is price × rate ÷ (1 + rate), taken on the discounted price. Shelf prices here normally include GST; switch it off for a price quoted without tax.
Each discount comes off the price left after the one before it, not off the original. The gap is 6% — ₹7.2 on this item.
Step by step
| Step | From | Taken off | Leaves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sale | ₹120 | −₹36 | ₹84 |
| Extra code | ₹84 | −₹16.8 | ₹67.2 |
GST contained in the price
Work backwards
Useful for checking a claimed "was" price. Divide by (1 − rate), never multiply by (1 + rate) — that is a different and smaller number.

How the discount calculator works
Offers are applied in order, each from the price the last one left, as a percentage or a fixed rupee amount. Because the MRP includes GST, the amount before tax is the final price divided by one plus the slab rate.
before GST = final ÷ (1 + slab); GST = final − before GST; slab choices: 0%, 5%, 18%, 40%
- The slab menu shows Nil, Merit rate, Standard rate and Special rate, with Standard at 18% selected.
- Price includes GST starts on, so the amount you type is read as the MRP.
- The slabs reflect the changes in force from 22 September 2025: 5% and 18% as the main rates and 40% for special goods.
- Large rupee amounts are written in lakh and crore grouping, as in ₹1,25,000.00.
- A fixed rupee coupon is capped at the price that remains.
How to use the discount calculator
- Enter the original price. Type the shelf price, a quantity and a currency symbol of up to three characters.
- Add discounts in order. Each row has a label, a value and a switch between percent and a fixed amount. The numbers show the order they are applied in.
- Set the tax treatment. Enter a rate and say whether the price already includes it. The tax card shows the net price, the tax and the amount payable. Where a country has several rates, a menu above the field lists them.
- Work backwards from a sale price. Enter what you paid and the advertised percentage to see the original price that figure implies.
- Compare multi-buys and pack sizes. Use the deals tab with the price of one item, then the unit-price tab to compare packs on cost per unit.
Example: A ₹5,000.00 MRP with 20% off and a ₹500.00 coupon
₹5,000.00 less 20% is ₹4,000.00, and the ₹500.00 coupon leaves ₹3,500.00, a saving of ₹1,500.00 or 30%. At the 18% standard slab the amount before GST is ₹2,966.10 and the GST is ₹533.90. At the 5% slab the same price holds ₹166.67 of GST, and at 40% it holds ₹1,000.00.
When to use the discount calculator
- Stacking an online sale and a bank offer. Enter the percentage first and the rupee coupon second, then read the final MRP-based price.
- Finding the GST inside an MRP. Pick the slab for the item and read the tax card.
- Comparing slabs for a purchase. Switch between 5% and 18% to see how the tax inside the same price changes.
- Checking pack value. Use the unit-price tab to find the cheapest pack per gram or millilitre.
What the discount calculator does not do
- One slab applies to the entire price, so mixed baskets need separate runs.
- Quantity multiplies the item result, so a basket coupon uses a quantity of 1.
- Compensation cess on certain goods is not modelled.
- The slab examples come from the PIB backgrounder, and some special low rates are not included.
- Sums are unrounded, and the figures show two decimals.
When something else is a better fit
- When you need a general percentage calculation, use the Percentage Calculator.
- When you want income tax for a salary, use the Tax Calculator.
Questions about the discount calculator
Does an MRP include GST?
Yes, so the tool reads your price as inclusive. In a ₹3,500.00 final price at 18%, ₹533.90 is GST.
What are the GST slabs?
Nil, 5% merit, 18% standard and 40% special, as in force from 22 September 2025. Pick the slab that matches the item.
Why is 20% off plus a coupon not the sum?
The coupon comes off ₹4,000.00, not ₹5,000.00, so the saving is ₹1,500.00, or 30%.
Does the slab change the discount?
No. It only changes the split. The price stays ₹3,500.00, but the tax inside is ₹166.67 at 5% and ₹533.90 at 18%.
Which items are at 40%?
Pan masala, tobacco products, aerated drinks, high-end cars, yachts and private aircraft are listed at the 40% special rate.
