    Ideal Weight Calculator

    🇮🇳 India version

Six ideal weight formulas rarely agree, and in India the Normal BMI band ends at 22.9 rather than 24.9. This calculator runs the six formulas in kilograms, averages them, and prints the Normal weight range from the ICMR-NIN cut-offs for your height. Treat the numbers as rough guides, and ask a doctor what suits you.

Healthy range by BMI: 18.5 to 23 kg/m² (ICMR-NIN Asian cut-offs, ICMR-NIN: Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024). ICMR-NIN uses these Asian cut-offs for all Indian adults because Asians tend to carry more body fat at a given BMI.

    India rules and figures

    • ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 give a Normal BMI of 18.5 to 22.9, with Overweight from 23 and Obesity from 27.5.
    • ICMR-NIN sets one list of cut-offs for every Indian adult, citing greater body fat among Asians at the same BMI.
    • Feet and inches for height and kilograms for weight are the opening units on the Indian page.
    • Children are not covered by any BMI cut-off in the parts of the guideline reviewed, so these ranges serve adults only.

How the ideal weight calculator works

Height becomes centimetres and inches, six formulas run in kilograms and are rounded to 0.1 kg, and the BMI band comes from the ICMR-NIN cut-offs.

    Robinson (women) = 49 + 1.7 × (inches − 60) kg. Normal range = 18.5 × m² up to 22.9 × m²

    • Height opens in feet and inches and weight in kilograms. Switch Height Unit to cm if you know your height that way.
    • The Normal band tops out at 22.9 × height², so for a woman of 5 ft 2 in the range is 45.9 to 56.8 kg, not the wider range a 24.9 cut-off would give.
    • The formulas themselves are Western and use height and gender only, so they do not take ICMR-NIN's lower cut-offs into account.
    • The page shows the ICMR-NIN source and its note under the ranges.

How to use the ideal weight calculator

    1. Enter height. The page starts on feet and inches. Choose cm in Height Unit if you prefer centimetres.
    2. Add current weight in kilograms. This optional box lets the page say whether you are inside the Normal range.
    3. Choose gender. Profile then Gender selects the men's or women's formula set.
    4. Compare the formulas with the Normal range. Individual Formula Results lists the six, and BMI-Based Weight Ranges gives the ICMR-NIN-based band.
    5. Log or copy the result. Save Entry adds a dated weight, and Copy sends the results to your clipboard.

Example: 5 ft 7 in man and 5 ft 2 in woman

For a man of 5 ft 7 in, Broca gives the lowest figure at 63.2 kg and Hamwi the highest at 66.9 kg, with an average of 65.4 kg, against an ICMR-NIN Normal range of 53.6 to 66.3 kg. A woman of 5 ft 2 in averages 51.8 kg across the six, with a Normal range of 45.9 to 56.8 kg.

When to use the ideal weight calculator

    • Seeing how formulas compare with ICMR-NIN. Notice that some formula results for a man of 5 ft 7 in sit close to the top of the Normal range, around 66 kg.
    • Finding your Normal weight range. Read the BMI-based band in kilograms for your height, using the Indian cut-off of 23.
    • Tracking toward a range. Save weights over weeks and compare them with the band on the Tracking tab.

What the ideal weight calculator does not do

    • All six formulas take height and gender and nothing else. None was derived from Indian data, and muscle and age are ignored.
    • The Normal range uses ICMR-NIN's 23 cut-off for every adult, so it cannot reflect personal risk.
    • Calculation Method, Activity Level and Body Type are kept in the profile but do not change the numbers.
    • The page offers estimates and does not replace a doctor's advice on weight.

When something else is a better fit

    • When you want a BMI figure with the ICMR-NIN category, use the BMI Calculator.
    • When you want body fat from neck and waist tape measurements, use the Body Fat Calculator.
    • When you need a weight goal tied to a health condition, use a doctor or qualified dietitian, who work from your history and tests.

Questions about the ideal weight calculator

Why is the Normal range lower than on other country pages?

ICMR-NIN ends the Normal band at 22.9, not 24.9, citing higher body fat among Asians at the same BMI. At 5 ft 7 in the top of the range is 66.3 kg, not about 72 kg.

    Which formula should I trust?

None alone. Each uses height and gender only, so the page lists all six and an average. For a man of 5 ft 7 in they run from 63.2 to 66.9 kg.

Can I enter height in centimetres?

Yes. Change Height Unit to cm and type the number. The page works from centimetres and inches either way, and the choice is remembered.

    Are the results for children?

No. These are adult ranges, and the reviewed ICMR-NIN sections list no BMI cut-offs for children. A doctor can assess a child's growth with proper charts.
