# Invoice Generator

An Indian GST invoice splits the tax in two ways: CGST and SGST when the sale is inside one state, IGST when it crosses states. This generator opens in rupees at the 18% standard slab, asks for the supply type, adds a GSTIN box under your details and prints the split on the PDF.

## India rules and figures

- After the 56th GST Council changes effective 22 September 2025, the rate structure is 5%, 18% and 40%, with nil-rated supplies at 0%.
- The 5% merit rate applies to goods such as soap and packaged namkeen, as well as most medicines.
- At 18%, the standard rate, the PIB backgrounder lists cement, televisions and motorcycles up to 350 cc among many other goods and services.
- The 40% special rate is for goods such as aerated drinks, yachts and private aircraft.
- A 9 October 2026 PIB backgrounder on GST process reforms describes the rate structure as still 5%, 18% and 40%.

## How the invoice generator works

Each row multiplies quantity by rate. A discount then reduces the subtotal, and GST at the chosen slab is charged on what remains. For a sale within a state the tax is halved into CGST and SGST; between states it prints as one IGST line.

Formula: `tax = (subtotal − discount) × GST rate; CGST = SGST = tax ÷ 2 within a state, or IGST = tax between states`

- The slab menu offers Nil at 0%, Merit rate at 5%, Standard rate at 18% and Special rate at 40%. The page opens at 18%.
- Supply type has two choices, Within the state (CGST + SGST) and Between states (IGST). Within a state each half is shown with half the rate, for example 9% and 9% at 18%.
- If the two halves would differ by a paisa after rounding, SGST takes the odd paisa so CGST plus SGST equals the tax.
- The GSTIN box is under From (Your Information). Its value prints as GSTIN followed by what you typed and is not validated.
- Dates run day, month, year and the currency opens as INR. The built-in PDF font cannot draw the rupee sign, so the file shows INR instead, and the draft stays in your browser.

## How to use the invoice generator

1. **Set the number, dates and GST slab.** Give the invoice a number, check the dates, choose the slab for what you sell and set any discount.
2. **Choose the supply type.** Pick within the state for CGST plus SGST, or between states for IGST. The tax lines change to match.
3. **Enter your GSTIN and the buyer.** Type your GSTIN in your block, then the buyer's name and address.
4. **List the items and save.** Add each line with a description, quantity and rate in rupees, check the preview, then export the PDF or copy the text.

## Example: Two lines at 18% GST, within a state

Charge 40 hours at 1,500 and 12 units at 850. The lines are 60,000.00 and 10,200.00, so the subtotal is ₹70,200.00 with no discount. GST at 18% is ₹12,636.00. Within one state it prints as CGST at 9% of ₹6,318.00 and SGST at 9% of ₹6,318.00, for a total of ₹82,836.00. Between states the same ₹12,636.00 appears as a single IGST line.

## When to use the invoice generator

- **Billing a customer in your own state.** Keep the supply type within the state and the PDF shows CGST and SGST as two equal lines.
- **Selling to another state.** Switch to between states so the whole tax prints as one IGST line.
- **Goods on a different slab.** Choose 5% or 40% from the slab menu to match what you sell.
- **Checking a vendor's bill.** Enter their items and discount and compare the CGST, SGST or IGST lines with theirs.

## What the invoice generator does not do

- One GST slab applies to the whole invoice. Items on different slabs need separate invoices.
- The tool does not choose the supply type or the slab for your goods. That depends on the place of supply and the item.
- Cess, reverse charge, HSN codes and e-invoicing details are not included.
- The GSTIN is printed as typed and is not validated.
- The PDF shows INR in place of the rupee sign, and Hindi or other scripts print as a question mark.
- Currency changes alter the symbol only, with no conversion.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you file GST returns and need e-invoices**, use accounting software that works with the GST portal.
- **When you want income tax on a salary**, use the [Tax Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/tax-calculator.md).
- **When you are checking a discount first**, use the [Discount Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/discount-calculator.md).

## Questions about the invoice generator

### When do I use CGST and SGST, and when IGST?

Use CGST plus SGST for a supply within one state and IGST for a supply between states. The Supply type menu switches the tax lines to match.

### Which GST slab does the tool start with?

18%, the standard rate. The menu also has Nil at 0%, the merit rate at 5% and the special rate at 40%.

### How is 18% split within a state?

Into CGST at 9% and SGST at 9%. On ₹70,200.00 each half is ₹6,318.00, and together they equal the ₹12,636.00 of tax.

### Where do I enter the GSTIN?

In the GSTIN box under From (Your Information). It appears on the PDF under your address as typed.

### Why does the PDF say INR?

The font built into the PDF cannot draw the rupee sign, so the file writes the currency code. The on-screen preview shows the symbol.
