# Personal Loan Calculator

Indian lenders must hand over a Key Fact Statement before the loan, showing the APR with all charges and the repayment schedule. This calculator works from the amount, rate, tenure and processing fee you enter, then shows the EMI, interest paid, an APR and the total cost in rupees, so you can check the statement.

## India rules and figures

- Lenders must give a Key Fact Statement before the loan, showing the APR, meaning interest plus all charges, and an amortisation schedule.
- The Key Fact Statement requirement applies to new retail and MSME loans from 1 October 2024.
- It is valid for at least 3 working days for loans of 7 days or more.
- Charges that are not in the Key Fact Statement cannot be levied without the borrower's consent.
- Credit card receivables are exempt from the requirement.
- These details come from RBI search results and the NBFC directions; the April 2024 circular itself was not opened.

## How the personal loan calculator works

Each EMI is the same amount. Interest is charged monthly at one twelfth of the annual rate on the outstanding balance, so the early instalments are mostly interest. A processing fee does not change the EMI, but it reduces the money that reaches you, so the APR from your numbers is above the rate you typed.

Formula: `EMI = amount × u × (1 + u)^months ÷ ((1 + u)^months − 1), where u is the yearly rate ÷ 12`

- The rate box is labelled APR (annual percentage rate) in the Key Fact Statement (%), and it is used as the interest rate.
- The APR result is solved from the amount received after the processing fee and every EMI.
- Amounts use lakh grouping, and the starting figures are scaled up for rupees.
- Tenure is years plus extra months, so 3 years is 36 EMIs.
- The EMI is coloured by size using bands that are 40 times larger than the ones used elsewhere.

## How to use the personal loan calculator

1. **Enter amount and rate.** Type the amount you want to borrow and the rate from your offer or Key Fact Statement.
2. **Set the tenure.** Enter whole years, then add any extra months in the second box.
3. **Add the processing fee.** Enter the processing fee as a rupee amount, not a percentage. Use 0 if the lender charges none.
4. **Read the results.** Look at the EMI, the interest paid, the APR your inputs imply, and the full cost including the fee.
5. **Check the first year.** The amortization tab splits each of the first twelve EMIs into interest and principal.

## Example: A ₹5,00,000 loan at 11.5% for three years, plus a ₹10,000 processing fee

Thirty-six EMIs of ₹16,488.00 include ₹93,568.12 of interest, and with the fee the cost totals ₹6,03,568.12. In the first EMI, ₹4,791.67 is interest and ₹11,696.34 is principal. The APR from these figures is 12.91%, above the 11.5% rate because the fee is taken from the amount you get. A 5-year tenure gives an EMI of ₹10,996.30 and interest of ₹1,59,778.22, with an APR of 12.39%.

## When to use the personal loan calculator

- **Checking a Key Fact Statement.** Enter the amount, rate, tenure and fee from the statement and compare the APR the tool finds with the one shown.
- **Choosing 3 or 5 years.** Compare EMIs and total interest for each tenure.
- **Pricing the processing fee.** Add the fee and watch the APR climb past the rate while the total cost grows.
- **Setting an EMI budget.** Adjust the amount until the EMI fits your monthly outgoings.

## What the personal loan calculator does not do

- The APR is calculated from your figures. A lender's statement follows RBI rules for disclosure, so compare the two and ask about any difference.
- Only the first twelve EMIs are shown in the schedule, and the Key Fact Statement gives the full schedule.
- Fixed-rate loans paid on time are modelled; floating rates, late fees and prepayment charges are not.
- Insurance sold with the loan is not included unless you add its cost to the fee box.
- The RBI directions were read through search results and the NBFC directions, so check your lender's document for the exact terms.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you want to prepay a loan**, use the [Early Payoff Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/early-payoff-calculator.md).
- **When you are comparing lenders**, use the [Loan Comparison Tool](https://aumnitools.com/tool/loan-comparison-tool.md).
- **When you need the legally stated APR**, use the Key Fact Statement your lender must provide.

## Questions about the personal loan calculator

### What is a Key Fact Statement?

A document the lender must give before the loan, showing the APR (interest plus all charges) and an amortisation schedule. It applies to new retail and MSME loans from 1 October 2024.

### What is the EMI on ₹5,00,000 over 3 years at 11.5%?

₹16,488.00, with ₹93,568.12 of interest. Including the ₹10,000 fee, the full cost is ₹6,03,568.12.

### Why is the APR higher than 11.5%?

Because the fee is deducted from what you receive: ₹4,90,000 reaches you but you repay on ₹5,00,000. The APR from these figures is 12.91%.

### Can a lender add a charge later?

Charges that are not in the Key Fact Statement cannot be levied without the borrower's consent.

### How long is the statement valid?

At least 3 working days, for loans of 7 days or more.
