# Shipping Cost Calculator

Courier companies in India bill a parcel on the greater of its actual weight and its volumetric weight. This page opens in kilograms and centimetres with divisor 5000, compares services using rupee rates that you type in, and can estimate import duty and GST, with 18% as the standard slab to start from.

## India rules and figures

- India's GST structure after the 22 September 2025 changes has slabs of 5%, 18% and 40%, with some supplies nil-rated at 0%.
- The standard 18% slab covers items such as cement, televisions, air conditioners and small cars, and the customs tab fills in 18 by default.
- Parcels in the Indian settings use kilograms and centimetres, so the page begins in metric with divisor 5000.
- The duty rate, threshold and goods value in the example are typed for illustration. They are not customs tariff rates.

## How the shipping cost calculator works

The box volume divided by the divisor gives volumetric weight in kilograms. The courier bills the bigger of that and the scale weight, and each service applies a per-kilogram rate, a fee per parcel and a surcharge percentage to it.

Formula: `volumetric kg = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, volumetric); price = (billable × rate + fee × parcels) × (1 + surcharge %) + insurance`

- Kilograms and centimetres come first, with divisor choices of 5000, 6000 and 4000. The page begins at 5000.
- The starting rows read 2.20, 3.40 and 7.80 per kilogram with the rupee sign. They are the same example numbers every country gets, not courier prices and not realistic rupee rates, so replace them.
- Billable weight is not rounded to a courier's next step, and there are no zone or distance tiers.
- Each box shows length plus girth, flagged above 330 cm. It is a note only and never changes a quote.
- The import tax box is labelled Import VAT / GST (%) and begins at 18, the standard slab. Change it for another slab. Above your threshold it applies to goods, the cheapest shipping and duty together.

## How to use the shipping cost calculator

1. **Check the units and divisor.** The tool starts in centimetres and kilograms with divisor 5000. Pick the divisor given in your courier's terms.
2. **Describe the parcel.** Enter length, width, height and actual weight for each box, plus how many are identical.
3. **Type in the rates you were quoted.** Replace the three example rows with the per-kilogram rate, parcel fee and surcharge from your quote, in rupees.
4. **Add cover for the goods.** Turn insurance on and type a percentage and the declared value.
5. **Estimate import charges.** For an import, switch the border option on and enter the goods value, a threshold and a duty rate. The GST box starts at 18; change it for another slab.
6. **Copy or export the quote.** Copy places a short quote on the clipboard, and Export saves a CSV with the parcels and services in it.

## Example: A courier bag of 7 kg measuring 50 × 40 × 30 cm

The sides multiply to 60,000 cm³, and divisor 5000 makes that 12.00 kg of volumetric weight against 7.00 kg actual. The courier bills the larger figure. On the example rates Economy is ₹34.61, Standard ₹53.35 and Express ₹124.61. Imagine goods worth ₹5,000 with ₹1,000 entered as the threshold. Duty comes to ₹500.00 at 10%, while GST of 18% on ₹5,534.61 is ₹996.23, and Economy leaves a landed cost of ₹6,530.84.

## When to use the shipping cost calculator

- **Spotting a box that is too large.** When volumetric weight beats actual weight, the card notes how many kilograms of air you are paying for.
- **Comparing courier offers.** Enter each in a row and read them cheapest first with a per-kilogram figure.
- **Landed cost of an imported item.** Type goods value, duty and the GST slab to see charges and the final total in rupees.
- **Orders with several cartons.** Add one card per box size and totals combine the weights.

## What the shipping cost calculator does not do

- The rates are examples and they are not fetched from any courier or the postal service.
- Zones, fuel changes by distance and weight tiers are not modelled.
- Cover is a flat percentage of the declared value added to each service.
- One duty rate and one GST slab cover the whole parcel, while real duty depends on the classification of the goods.
- Clearance or handling fees charged by the courier are not in the landed cost.
- There is a single currency symbol, with no conversion between currencies.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you need a price you can book**, use the courier's own rate page, then type its numbers in here.
- **When you need to change units first**, use the [Unit Converter](https://aumnitools.com/tool/unit-converter.md).

## Questions about the shipping cost calculator

### Why is a 7 kg box billed at 12 kg?

Its 60,000 cm³ volume divided by 5000 is 12.00 kg. That exceeds the actual weight, so it is the figure charged.

### What changes with divisor 4000 or 6000?

For this carton, 4000 gives 15.00 kg, 5000 gives 12.00 kg and 6000 gives 10.00 kg. Pick the divisor in your courier's terms.

### Are the service prices realistic for India?

No. They are illustrative numbers with a rupee sign. Replace every one with a quote from your courier.

### Which GST rate does an import start with?

18, the standard slab. Overwrite it with 5 or 40 for goods on those slabs. The tool applies it to goods plus shipping plus duty.

### Why does a low-value parcel show no duty?

Charges start only when the goods value is above your threshold. At or below it, duty and GST are zero.
