# Tip Calculator

In India a tip is optional, and since the CCPA guidelines a restaurant cannot add a service charge by default. The calculator opens at 10%, shows rupees, offers 5% and 15% buttons, and lets the slider reach 20%. Enter the GST line from the bill to base the tip on the amount before tax.

## India rules and figures

- Under the CCPA guidelines of 4 July 2022, a service charge cannot be added automatically or under another name.
- Entry or service cannot be refused because a customer will not pay a service charge.
- The Delhi High Court upheld the guidelines on 28 March 2025.
- No official tip percentage is set, so the 10% starting figure is a tool suggestion, not a government figure.
- GST has a nil rate, a 5% rate, an 18% standard rate and a 40% special rate, in force from 22 September 2025.

## How the tip calculator works

The tool subtracts any GST amount you enter from the bill to get a subtotal, takes the tip percentage of that subtotal, and adds it to the full bill. Prices in India carry GST inside them, so the GST line is what to type.

Formula: `tip = (bill − GST) × tip% ÷ 100; total = bill + tip; GST slabs in the data: 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%`

- The opening tip is 10%, and that figure is a suggestion from this tool, not an official one.
- The buttons are 5%, 10% and 15%, the slider stops at 20%, and Round Up lifts the tip to a whole rupee.
- The five ratings map to 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, so the default sits on three stars.
- Large amounts group the Indian way, as in ₹1,25,000.00, and the currency starts as the rupee.
- A service charge that was added by default can be taken out of the tip base through the tax box, or ignored with the slider at 0%.

## How to use the tip calculator

1. **Enter the bill and tax.** Type the total on the check. If the tip should exclude tax, type the tax line too and the tip is taken from the pre-tax subtotal.
2. **Choose a currency.** Pick the currency whose symbol and decimals you want on the results. It starts as the country's own currency.
3. **Pick the tip percentage.** Click a star rating, use a preset or the slider, or type a percentage and press Apply.
4. **Round the tip if you like.** Switch on Round Up to lift the tip to the next whole currency unit.
5. **Copy or keep the numbers.** Copy any figure with its button, download the receipt, or save the calculation to the history list.

## Example: A ₹2,205.00 bill with ₹105.00 of GST

Suppose the bill is ₹2,205.00 and its GST line is ₹105.00, so the subtotal is ₹2,100.00. Ten percent comes to ₹210.00, which brings the bill to ₹2,415.00. Five percent gives ₹105.00 and ₹2,310.00; fifteen percent gives ₹315.00 and ₹2,520.00. With the GST box empty, 10% of the whole bill is ₹220.50. The ₹105 line is illustrative, a 5% charge.

## When to use the tip calculator

- **Checking a bill for a service charge.** Look for a charge line, and set the tip to 0% if you decide not to pay one that you were not told about.
- **Tipping on the amount before GST.** Type the GST amount from the bill so the percentage is taken from the pre-tax subtotal.
- **Tipping a delivery or cab driver.** Press 5% for modest service and read the total in rupees.
- **Rounding to whole rupees.** Switch on Round Up to hand over a tip without paise.

## What the tip calculator does not do

- The tool cannot tell whether a charge on your bill is lawful; it only subtracts what you type.
- No official percentage exists, so every button is a suggestion.
- GST is not worked out for you, and the 5% shown in the example is only illustrative.
- Switching currency alters the symbol and decimals but converts nothing.
- The Apply box ignores 0, and history disappears on reload.

## Questions about the tip calculator

### Can a restaurant add a service charge in India?

Not by default. The CCPA guidelines of 4 July 2022 say it cannot be added automatically or under another name, and service cannot be refused for not paying it.

### Is there an official tip percentage?

No official percentage is set. This tool opens at 10%, offers 5% and 15% buttons, and treats all of them as suggestions.

### Should I tip on the amount before GST?

You can. On ₹2,205.00 with ₹105.00 GST entered, a 10% tip is ₹210.00; without it, it is ₹220.50.

### What are the GST slabs?

In force from 22 September 2025 they are nil, 5%, 18% standard and 40% special. Prices already include GST, so your bill shows it as a line.

### Did a court uphold the service charge rules?

Yes. The Delhi High Court upheld the CCPA guidelines on 28 March 2025.
