    Water Intake Calculator

    🇮🇳 India version

ICMR-NIN says a healthy adult needs about 2 L of water a day, roughly eight glasses including other drinks, and more in very hot weather or hard exercise. This page starts your goal at 2,000 ml and adds a weight-based target, with a log that counts each drink by hydration value.

    India rules and figures

    • ICMR-NIN says a healthy adult needs about 2 L of water a day, around eight glasses including beverages, and more in very hot weather or hard exercise.
    • The ICMR-NIN guidance gives one figure for men and women, not separate ones, so the goal here starts at 2,000 ml for everyone.
    • The ICMR-NIN figure is for drinks, so food is not counted towards it, unlike the total-water figures used in the US and Canada.
    • The Indian page begins with weight in kilograms and volumes in millilitres, with 70 kg as the sample weight.

How the water intake calculator works

The weight-based target begins at 35 mL per kilogram, is scaled by activity, climate and other settings, and stops at 50 mL per kilogram. The goal is a separate setting that starts at 2,000 ml for everyone, because the guidance is not split by sex.

    70 kg × 35 = 2,450 mL; × 1.05 (male) × 1.25 (Moderate) = 3,216 mL; Optimal is limited to 70 × 50 = 3,500 mL

    • ICMR-NIN gives one figure of about 2 L for adults, so the starting goal is 2,000 ml whether male, female or unset.
    • A hot or humid climate raises the target by 30% or 40%, which matters in much of India, and very hot weather is where ICMR-NIN also says to drink more.
    • Coconut water counts at 0.95, green tea at 0.9, coffee at 0.8 and soda at 0.6, so mixed drinks are counted by hydration, not volume alone.
    • Weight starts in kilograms and volume in millilitres, and each choice is kept for later visits.
    • The Daily Water Goal and the calculated target are different numbers, and Use recommended copies one into the other.

How to use the water intake calculator

    1. Enter weight and details. On Settings, enter weight in kilograms, then an optional age and a gender. Gender adds 5% to the calculated target for men but does not change the 2,000 ml goal.
    2. Describe your day. Choose an activity level and a climate. Humid and Hot raise the target most, and altitude only counts above 2,500 m.
    3. Log what you drink. Select water, tea, coconut water or another drink, enter the millilitres and add it.
    4. Compare target and goal. Analysis shows the calculated amounts, while Goals holds the 2,000 ml daily goal.
    5. Copy a summary. Share Report copies a day summary, and Export Data downloads your records as a file.

Example: A 70 kg man, Moderate activity, Temperate climate

The base is 2,450 mL, male adds 5% and Moderate activity multiplies by 1.25, so the Recommended target is 3,216 mL. Minimum is 2,100 mL, and Optimal and Max Safe both come to 3,500 mL. The goal starts at 2,000 ml. Say he drinks 1,000 ml water, 200 ml coconut water and 250 ml green tea. Hydration values turn that into 1,000 + 190 + 225 = 1,415 ml, near 71% of the goal.

When to use the water intake calculator

    • Comparing 2 L with your own target. See how far a weight-based target sits above or below the ICMR-NIN guide of about 2 L.
    • Planning for the hot season. Switch Climate to Hot or Humid and see how the target grows through summer.
    • Counting chai, coconut water and lassi-style drinks. Log tea and coconut water beside plain water and read the hydration-weighted total.
    • Watching sugary drinks. See liquid calories and caffeine totals for the day from what you log.

What the water intake calculator does not do

    • ICMR-NIN gives about 2 L as a general figure for healthy adults, not a personal requirement.
    • The calculated target is usually well above 2 L for a heavier or more active person, so choose which of the two you want as your goal.
    • The beverage list has ten fixed items, so buttermilk, lassi and similar drinks must be logged under the closest match.
    • Streaks and bars compare each day with the goal set now, and reminders appear only while the page is open.
    • If you have a condition that affects fluids, such as kidney or heart disease, your doctor's advice comes first.

When something else is a better fit

    • When you want a daily check-off with real streaks and history, use the Habit Tracker.
    • When you want calories and macro targets for the same profile, use the Calorie Calculator.
    • When you have a medical condition that affects fluids, use your clinician's guidance, which overrides any general formula.

Questions about the water intake calculator

How much water does ICMR-NIN advise?

About 2 L a day for a healthy adult, roughly eight glasses including other drinks, and more in very hot weather or hard exercise. It does not split the figure by sex.

Why is my calculated target higher than 2,000 ml?

The target scales 35 mL per kilogram by activity, climate and gender. For the 70 kg example it is 3,216 mL, while the 2,000 ml goal follows the national guide.

    Does tea count towards water?

Partly. Green tea counts at 0.9 and coffee at 0.8, so 250 ml of green tea adds 225 ml. Plain water counts in full.

Which unit does the page start in?

Kilograms for weight and millilitres for volume. You can change either one, and the choice is kept in this browser.

Should I follow this if my doctor limited my fluids?

No. Follow your doctor. The page uses general multipliers and cannot know about kidney, heart or other conditions that change how much fluid is right for you.
