    Work Hours Calculator

    🇮🇳 India version

Under India's labour codes, normal hours are capped at 8 a day and 48 a week, and work beyond that is paid at twice the normal rate. This calculator totals a week from your start, finish and break times, finds the overtime above both limits, and prices it at 2 times your hourly rate in rupees.

    India rules and figures

    • The four labour codes, including the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, came into force on 21 November 2025.
    • The OSH Code caps normal hours at 8 a day and 48 a week, and overtime needs the worker's consent.
    • Work beyond 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week is paid at twice the normal rate.
    • The Ministry pre-published the rules under the codes on 30 December 2025, so details may still change.

How the Work Hours Calculator works

Each day's net time is finish minus start minus the unpaid break, with a finish before the start read as the next day. The rule opens as a daily or weekly test at 8 and 48 hours, with the multiplier set to 2.

    net minutes = (out − in, +24 h if out < in) − break; pay = regular × rate + overtime × rate × 2

    • The default rule is Over 8 a day or 48 a week at a multiplier of 2. Where both tests apply, the larger overtime total is used.
    • The target for the week opens at 48 hours, the OSH Code's weekly cap, and the plus or minus figure compares your total with it.
    • Rows start filled for weekdays only, 09:00 until 17:30 with 30 minutes unpaid, which totals 40 hours and sits under the weekly cap.
    • Overtime needs the worker's consent under the OSH Code. The tool cannot record consent, so it prices any hours you enter.
    • State rules and sector exemptions are not included. The currency symbol opens as ₹ and the timesheet is saved in your browser.

How to use the Work Hours Calculator

    1. Enter the days worked. Give each day a start, a finish and an unpaid break in minutes.
    2. Set the hourly rate in rupees. Type your hourly rate on the pay tab. The overtime rule and the multiplier of 2 are already in place.
    3. Review the thresholds. Change the daily or weekly hours if your state or sector sets different limits.
    4. Compare with 48 hours. Read the figure beside the target to see how far the week is from the weekly cap.
    5. Check a single shift. Use the shift tab for one shift with its own times and break.

Example: Overtime on 45 hours at ₹300 an hour

Five days of 09:00 to 18:30 with a half-hour break come to 9 hours a day, 45 for the week, which is 3 short of the 48-hour weekly cap. The daily test still bites: every day has 1 hour beyond 8, so 5 hours count as overtime. Pay is ₹12,000.00 for 40 regular hours at ₹300 plus ₹3,000.00 for 5 overtime hours at ₹600, a gross of ₹15,000.00. A weekly test alone would find no overtime, because 45 is below 48.

When to use the Work Hours Calculator

    • Checking overtime on a salary slip. Enter the week and see how many hours land above 8 a day.
    • Seeing the weekly cap. Compare the total with 48 hours to know how much room is left.
    • Night shifts. Type real clock times and the tool counts the shift past midnight.
    • Weighing extra work. Add the hours to a day and see the double-rate pay.

What the Work Hours Calculator does not do

    • Pay is gross, before tax, provident fund and other deductions.
    • State rules and sector exemptions are not included.
    • The rules under the labour codes were only pre-published, and details may change.
    • Consent for overtime, rest intervals and spread-over limits are not checked.
    • Hours on the shift tab are paid at the base rate with no overtime added.
    • The CSV export is the only way to take the timesheet out of this browser.

When something else is a better fit

    • When you need take-home pay after tax and deductions, use the Payroll Calculator.
    • When you just want a total of several durations, use the Time Duration Calculator.
    • When your state or contract sets its own limits, use the notice from your state labour department.

Questions about the Work Hours Calculator

What rate applies to overtime in India?

Twice the normal rate, for work beyond 8 hours a day or 48 a week under the labour codes. The tool starts with a multiplier of 2.

Why is there overtime in a 45-hour week?

Because the daily test applies too. Five 9-hour days each have 1 hour past 8, so 5 hours are overtime even though 45 is under 48.

    Does overtime need consent?

Yes, the OSH Code requires the worker's consent. The tool cannot check it and prices whatever hours you enter.

    Are the rules final?

The codes came into force on 21 November 2025, but the Ministry only pre-published the rules on 30 December 2025, so details may still change.

    Is my timesheet uploaded?

No. It is saved in this browser and reloaded on your next visit.
