New Zealand rules and figures
- New Zealand visitors start with NZD in the first box and USD in the second.
- A fallback table dated early 2024 holds 1.63 New Zealand dollars per US dollar.
- GST is 15% and is included in New Zealand shelf prices.
- A converted local price therefore already contains GST, and the converter does not change it.

How the currency converter works
Every currency is held as units per US dollar. A New Zealand dollar amount is divided by the New Zealand figure to reach US dollars, and a cross rate between two other currencies passes through the dollar as well.
USD = NZD amount ÷ NZD per USD; cross rate = rate(to) ÷ rate(from)
- The page opens with NZD in From and USD in To, until you choose either.
- After a failed fetch the badge changes from Daily rates to Built-in table (early 2024).
- The stored table has 1.63 New Zealand dollars per US dollar, which converts 2,500.00 NZD to 1,533.74 USD.
- Bitcoin and Ethereum come from a separate request, and use the table if only that request fails.
- Auto-refresh rates re-fetches at a chosen interval.
How to use the currency converter
- Enter an amount. Type the amount in the Amount box. The default is 100, and the Quick Conversions grid lists eight preset amounts for the same pair.
- Choose the currencies. Pick the From and To currencies from the menus; use the arrow button between them to swap the pair. Until you pick, From is your country's currency.
- Read the result. The Conversion Result card shows the converted amount, the exchange rate and its inverse. The Copy button puts the line on the clipboard; the line under the card shows when the rates were updated.
- Keep or compare pairs. Add to History records the conversion, Add to Favorites keeps the pair, and the Compare tab lists every currency's rate against USD.
- Do arithmetic first. On the Calculator tab, use the keypad, then press Use in Converter to send the result to the Amount box.
Example: 2,500.00 NZD to US dollars on the fallback table
The numbers here are from the stored table and not a current rate. At 1.63 New Zealand dollars to the US dollar, 2,500.00 NZD comes to 1,533.74 USD. Exchange Rate would show 1 NZD = 0.613497 USD, with Inverse Rate showing 1 USD = 1.630000 NZD. A successful fetch replaces them with the provider's daily figures.
When to use the currency converter
- Pricing an overseas subscription. Enter the US price and read it in New Zealand dollars.
- Comparing flights. Convert fares quoted in different currencies into the same one.
- Reading a USD invoice. Type the amount in US dollars and swap the pair if needed.
- Keeping a favourite pair. Press Add to Favorites for NZD and USD to find it again.
What the currency converter does not do
- The rates are daily mid-market figures and not what a bank charges.
- The fallback table from early 2024 can be far from current values.
- Only 14 currencies and two cryptocurrencies are offered.
- GST is neither added nor removed by the tool.
- No fees or spreads are included.
When something else is a better fit
- When you are paying or transferring money, use the quote from your bank or transfer provider.
- When you are travelling and want local prices in mind, use the Travel Currency Converter.
- When you want a percentage of a converted amount, use the Percentage Calculator.
Questions about the currency converter
Which currencies are chosen at first?
The first box holds NZD and the second USD. Changing either one overrides the default.
What does the Built-in table badge mean?
The daily rates could not be fetched, so the tool is showing an early-2024 table of approximate figures. Try Refresh when you are back online.
How is NZD converted to USD?
The amount is divided by the stored NZD figure per USD. At 1.63 that makes 2,500.00 NZD into 1,533.74 USD.
Do the rates include fees?
No. They are daily mid-market rates, so a bank, card or transfer service will charge more.
Is GST in the converted price?
If the original was a New Zealand shelf price, yes, because GST at 15% is included in it.
