Seasonal Activity Suggestions
40 things worth doing, filtered by the season, whether you want to be indoors or out, who you are with, how long you have and what you want to spend.
Peaks about half an hour before sunrise, late April to early June.
Radishes or cress for impatience; basil if you want to eat it.
One pot, no performance. The bar being low is what makes it happen.
Novelty is what makes a walk memorable rather than routine.
New Zealand rules and figures
- For New Zealand, per NIWA, June, July and August count as winter and December, January and February as summer.
- NIWA's pattern puts spring in September to November, the three months between its winter and summer.
- Seasons are reversed from the north, so spring planting in New Zealand falls from September to November.

How the seasonal activity suggestions tool works
The season buttons carry southern months and the ideas under them are fixed. Each filter removes ideas that do not match, and a seeded shuffle orders those that remain.
- Season counts are Spring 21, Summer 23, Autumn 21 and Winter 24, with 14 of the 40 ideas tagged for any season.
- Summer is December to February and Winter is June to August, with Spring and Autumn filling the other months.
- There are three cost bands, Free, Cheap and Costs something, and the length filter drops ideas longer than 45, 90 or 180 minutes.
- Switch the Southern setting off and the selected season moves six months. Saved hearts stay in this browser.
How to use the seasonal activity suggestions tool

Example: A cold June afternoon in New Zealand
With June giving Winter, choosing Indoors, Free and Under 90 min leaves three of the 24 Winter ideas: planning next year properly with a map and a calendar (90 minutes), phoning someone you have been meaning to phone (30) and a jigsaw, board game or card game with no screens present (90).
When to use the seasonal activity suggestions tool
- A summer weekend. Choose Summer, Outdoors and Free to see swimming, a meal outside and stay-out-until-dark ideas.
- A rainy winter day. Pick Winter and Indoors to see slow cooking, long reading and board games.
- Short spring outings. Use Spring, Outdoors and Under 90 min to find a quick idea for after work.
- Holiday shortlist. Heart favourites across seasons and copy the list to share.
What the seasonal activity suggestions tool does not do
- Some notes use northern timing: the dawn chorus line says late April to early June, which falls outside New Zealand's Spring months.
- The tool has no weather, tide or region data, so outdoor ideas may suit one region better than another.
- The Perseids and Geminids note names August and December, not southern seasons.
- Saved ideas stay in this browser only.
When something else is a better fit
- When you want a list of house jobs for the season, use the Seasonal Checklist.
- When you want to plan what to plant, use the Garden Planner.
- When you need venues, events or opening times, use a local council or regional tourism website.
Questions about the seasonal activity suggestions tool
Which months are Summer and Winter here?
NIWA summarises summer as December to February and winter as June to August. The page uses those months with Spring from September to November and Autumn from March to May.
Is the dawn chorus note right for New Zealand?
Its note was written for the northern spring. Use it as a hint about the bird season, not as a New Zealand date, and check local conditions.
Can I switch to a northern season?
Yes. Switch the Southern setting off, or press any season button, to see another list.
How does the length filter work?
It keeps ideas of the stated minutes or fewer, so a 45-minute idea passes Under 45 min. Across all seasons 9 of the 40 ideas pass that cap.
Do I need an account to save ideas?
No. Saves are in this browser's local storage on this device. There is no account, and another browser starts empty.
