# Seasonal Checklist

New Zealand has its Summer in December to February and its Winter in June to August, with Spring running September to November and Autumn March to May. This checklist opens on the season that holds today's month, keeps the Southern hemisphere switch on, and lists jobs for home, garden, car, money, health, wardrobe and admin.

## New Zealand rules and figures

- Earth Sciences New Zealand, formerly NIWA, summarises the year with summer in December to February and winter in June to August.
- Spring in New Zealand is September to November, following the same three-month pattern NIWA uses.
- The tool dates New Zealand Autumn as March to May, filling the gap between the summer and winter months NIWA names.

## How the Seasonal Checklist works

The season names and months come from the New Zealand calendar, so March to May reads Autumn and June to August reads Winter. A fixed library of 71 jobs is tagged by season and area, and your ticks stay in this browser.

- The season tiles show their own counts: Spring has 20 jobs, Summer 15, Autumn 19 and Winter 17.
- NIWA gives Summer as December to February and Winter as June to August, and the tool sets Spring from September to November and Autumn from March to May to match.
- The Southern hemisphere switch is on at the start. Switching it off moves the open season six months on, which can help if you are planning for family in the north.
- Jobs are not adjusted for region, so a heating or chimney job appears for every household whether or not it has one. The area filter removes whole groups at once.

## How to use the Seasonal Checklist

1. **Open a season.** Press Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring. The season for today's month is open by default, with a count of jobs done on each tile.
2. **Filter by area.** Choose an area such as Home or Car from the drop-down, or switch on Hide done to see only what is left.
3. **Tick off each job.** Press the square beside a job when it is finished. The bar and the count of jobs done update straight away.
4. **Add something local.** Enter your own task, choose an area and press Add to put it in the open season.
5. **Copy the list.** Copy the season as plain text, or Export all four seasons as a CSV file.

## Example: March in New Zealand: the Autumn list, filtered to Car

In March the Autumn tile is open, because the tool counts March to May as Autumn here. Autumn is made up of 8 home jobs, 3 garden, 2 car, 2 money, 2 health and 2 wardrobe ones, with nothing under admin, 19 in all. Choosing Car leaves two: check the battery, lights and wipers before the dark months, and fit winter tyres if you use them. Ticking both shows 2 of 19 done on the tile.

## When to use the Seasonal Checklist

- **An Autumn house check in March.** Open Autumn, filter to Home and plan the gutter clearing, draught-proofing and boiler or furnace service.
- **Winter admin in July.** Read the Winter list for backing up photos, updating emergency contacts and checking insurance still matches what you own.
- **Spring garden jobs in October.** Filter Spring to Garden & outside to find the irrigation test, mower service, sowing and mulching jobs.
- **A shared list for flatmates.** Copy the open season and paste it into a group chat so each flatmate ticks their own jobs.

## What the Seasonal Checklist does not do

- The job library is fixed and the same for every region, so a warm northern household and a cold southern one see identical lists.
- Some jobs assume a cold climate or a chimney. They stay in the list and are hidden only if you tick them and use Hide done.
- The checklist shows no frost or weather information. Check regional frost information, such as the MPI analysis, for timing.
- Nothing is sent anywhere: your ticks and added tasks live in this browser, with no reminders.

## Questions about the Seasonal Checklist

### Which season is June in New Zealand?

Winter. NIWA summarises winter as June to August, and the checklist opens its Winter tile and 17 jobs for those months, with the Southern hemisphere switch already on.

### How are Autumn and Spring dated?

Autumn runs March to May and Spring September to November. NIWA's own summaries name summer and winter, and the other two months of the pattern follow from them.

### Why does the list mention winter tyres?

It is one of two Car jobs in the Autumn list and reads fit winter tyres if you use them. If you do not, tick it or filter to another area.

### Can I switch to a northern season?

Yes. Turn the Southern hemisphere switch off and the open season moves six months on. You can also press any of the four tiles directly.

### What happens to my list if I clear my browser data?

It starts empty. Ticks and added tasks are stored only in this browser, so use Export first if you want a CSV copy.
