# Shipping Cost Calculator

A parcel sent within or into New Zealand is billed on the larger of its scale weight and its volume-based weight. This calculator opens in kilograms and centimetres at divisor 5000, lets you type in the service rates you were quoted in New Zealand dollars, and estimates import duty plus GST at the 15% rate.

## New Zealand rules and figures

- New Zealand has one GST rate, 15%, which Inland Revenue lists as the standard rate. The customs tab fills it in for you.
- Parcel measures in the New Zealand settings are kilograms and centimetres, so the calculator starts in metric.
- The duty rate and threshold in the example were typed for illustration and are not figures from Inland Revenue or the Customs Service.

## How the shipping cost calculator works

Length times width times height, divided by the divisor, gives dimensional weight in kilograms. The bigger of that and the scale figure is billed, and each service multiplies it by its per-kilogram rate before adding fees and a surcharge.

Formula: `dimensional kg = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(scale, dimensional); price = (billable × rate + fee × parcels) × (1 + surcharge %) + insurance`

- Kilograms and centimetres are the starting units. The divisor list has 5000, 6000 and 4000, and the page begins on 5000.
- Economy at $2.20, Standard at $3.40 and Express at $7.80 per kilogram are placeholders for illustration only. No New Zealand courier set them.
- The weight is exact. It is not rounded up to a courier's next step, and rural delivery or zone charges are not part of the sum.
- Each parcel gets a length-plus-girth reading and a flag above 330 cm. It informs and never alters a total.
- The tax box on the customs tab begins at 15, the New Zealand rate; the tool adds that GST to goods, the cheapest shipping and duty once the value exceeds the threshold.

## How to use the shipping cost calculator

1. **Check the units and divisor.** The tool opens in centimetres and kilograms with divisor 5000. Change the divisor to the number your courier uses.
2. **Describe the parcel.** Enter the size and weight of each box, and a quantity when the boxes are identical.
3. **Type in the rates you were quoted.** Edit the three example rows to the rates, parcel fee and surcharge on your own quote.
4. **Add cover for the goods.** Switch insurance on and enter the percentage and the value you want covered.
5. **Estimate import charges.** Turn the border switch on for goods from overseas, then give the goods value, threshold and duty rate. The GST box already reads 15.
6. **Copy or export the quote.** Press Copy to put a short summary on the clipboard, or Export to download a CSV of the parcels and the services.

## Example: Boxing up 5 kg in 45 × 30 × 30 cm

The three sides give 40,500 cm³. Divided by 5000 that is 8.10 kg, so the courier bills 8.10 kg even though the scale says 5.00 kg. Priced on the example rows, that is $25.00 for Economy, $38.24 for Standard and $88.71 for Express. For goods valued at $180 with a typed threshold of $150, duty at 5% is $9.00 and GST at 15% on $214.00 is $32.10. The landed cost with Economy shipping is $246.10.

## When to use the shipping cost calculator

- **Trimming a box.** If dimensional weight is above scale weight, the card tells you how many extra kilograms you are paying for.
- **Ranking quotes.** Enter several services and read them from cheapest up, with the all-in price per kilogram.
- **Landed cost of an online order.** Type the goods value, duty and 15% GST for what may be asked on delivery.
- **Several cartons in one order.** Add a card for each size and the totals add up to a combined billable weight.

## What the shipping cost calculator does not do

- Rates are examples typed into a grid. The tool does not look up any courier's prices.
- Rural surcharges, zones and weight bands are not included.
- Insurance adds one percentage of the declared value to each service total.
- A single duty rate covers the whole parcel, whereas actual duty depends on what the goods are.
- Courier fees for clearing the parcel are not part of the landed cost.
- Only one currency symbol is shown and there is no conversion.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you want a bookable price**, use your courier's quote page, then type those numbers in here.
- **When you need to switch units first**, use the [Unit Converter](https://aumnitools.com/tool/unit-converter.md).

## Questions about the shipping cost calculator

### Why is my billable weight 8.10 kg when the box weighs 5 kg?

The 40,500 cm³ box is bulky for its weight. Divided by 5000 it comes to 8.10 kg, and the larger figure is billed.

### What if my courier uses 4000 or 6000?

Choose it from the list. The 40,500 cm³ box works out at 10.13 kg using 4000, then 8.10 kg using 5000, then 6.75 kg using 6000.

### Do the example prices come from a courier?

No. They are illustrative, and every figure in the service rows can be replaced.

### Do I need to enter the GST rate for an import?

No. The box starts at 15, the New Zealand rate, and the tool applies it to goods, shipping and duty together.

### Why do I see no duty on a small order?

Charges start only when the goods value is higher than the threshold you entered. At or under it, duty and GST are both zero.
