Tip and Bill Splitter
🇳🇿 New Zealand version
Dinner in New Zealand is usually split without a tip, so this page opens at 0% and shows the plain share first. The row of buttons then adds 5%, 10% or 15% if the group wants to leave something. Everything is divided equally by head count and shown in dollars.

How the Tip and Bill Splitter works
The page divides the bill and the chosen tip by the number of diners. With the opening 0% the tip is nil, so each share is simply the bill divided by the count.
each = $180.00 ÷ 4 = $45.00 at 0%; with a tip, each = bill × (1 + tip% ÷ 100) ÷ 4
- Four buttons appear: 0% No tip, 5% Standard, 10% Good Service and 15% Great Service. The slider goes up to 20%.
- The badge says Little or No Tip below 5%, so the opening value reads that way.
- The comparison list on the Breakdown tab repeats the four buttons and shows the table total for each.
- GST at 15% is already in the printed prices, and hotels and restaurants do not add service charges.
- Tourism New Zealand names no percentage, so the buttons are suggestions only.
How to use the Tip and Bill Splitter
- Enter the amount on the bill. Type the total, for instance $180.00.
- Add the number of diners. Raise the counter until it equals the people dividing the cost.
- Read the per-person figures. Each person pays appears on the Breakdown tab. Use Copy Total to send the amount, or pick a button first if the group would like to tip.
Example: $180.00 for 4 people, with and without a tip
At the opening 0% each person pays $45.00 and the total is $180.00. At 5% the tip is $9.00, the total $189.00 and each share $47.25. At 10% each pays $49.50, and at 15% each pays $51.75, with table totals of $198.00 and $207.00.
When to use the Tip and Bill Splitter
- Splitting the plain bill. Leave the tip at 0% and read what each person owes.
- Adding a small thank-you. Press 5% and see what it costs each person at the table.
- Comparing a group tip. Check the four totals on the Breakdown tab before the group agrees.
- Dividing a shared trip fare. Enter the fare, keep the tip at nil and share it among passengers.
What the Tip and Bill Splitter does not do
- Each person pays the same amount, whatever they ordered.
- Tax cannot be entered, so any tip percentage applies to the whole bill including GST.
- The tool shows shares to the cent without rounding them up, so they can differ from the total by a cent.
- The tool records nothing and moves no money.
- A reset returns the page to 0% and an empty bill.
When something else is a better fit
- When you want the tip taken from the pre-GST amount, use the Tip Calculator, which has a tax box.
- When the group is sharing a shop purchase on sale, use the Discount Calculator.
