Tip Calculator
🇳🇿 New Zealand version
New Zealand does not expect a tip, so this version opens at 0% and the total equals the bill. If you want to reward good service, the buttons add 5%, 10% or 15%, and the slider reaches 20%. GST at 15% is already in every price, and you can enter it to tip on the amount before tax.

How the tip calculator works
The page begins with no tip and shows the bill as the total. Choosing a percentage adds a tip to the subtotal, which is the bill less any GST amount you enter, and the total is the bill plus the tip.
GST inside a price = price × 15 ÷ 115; tip = (bill − GST) × tip% ÷ 100; total = bill + tip
- The default is 0%, which makes the Poor rating (one star) the starting point.
- The buttons are 5%, 10% and 15%, and Tourism New Zealand gives no percentage, so they are only suggestions.
- With no service charge on the bill, there is nothing to remove before you tip.
- The tax box takes the GST amount if you want the tip based on the pre-GST subtotal.
- Round Up lifts a tip to the next whole dollar, so a $5.00 tip stays as it is.
How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill and tax. Type the total on the check. If the tip should exclude tax, type the tax line too and the tip is taken from the pre-tax subtotal.
- Choose a currency. Pick the currency whose symbol and decimals you want on the results. It starts as the country's own currency.
- Pick the tip percentage. Click a star rating, use a preset or the slider, or type a percentage and press Apply.
- Round the tip if you like. Switch on Round Up to lift the tip to the next whole currency unit.
- Copy or keep the numbers. Copy any figure with its button, download the receipt, or save the calculation to the history list.
Example: A $115.00 bill with $15.00 of GST
GST at 15% inside $115.00 is $15.00, which leaves a subtotal of $100.00. At the opening 0% the tip is $0.00 and the total stays $115.00. Choosing 5% adds $5.00 for $120.00, 10% adds $10.00 for $125.00, and 15% adds $15.00 for $130.00.
When to use the tip calculator
- Seeing the no-tip total. Type the bill and read the total at 0%, which is the normal outcome for a meal in New Zealand.
- Rewarding unusually good service. Press 5% or 10% and read how much that adds before you pay.
- Tipping before GST. Enter the GST figure from an invoice so the percentage applies to the price without tax.
- Rounding up a small tip. Switch on Round Up to hand over a whole-dollar amount rather than coins.
What the tip calculator does not do
- Zero is the opening value, and the Apply box ignores 0, so the slider is the way back to no tip.
- The buttons are suggestions from this tool, because no official percentage exists.
- GST is not calculated for you; only the amount you type is taken out of the tip base.
- No currency conversion happens, so a visitor still enters amounts in the currency printed on the bill.
- Saved entries are kept in memory and disappear when the page reloads.
When something else is a better fit
- When you are dividing the bill among friends, use the Tip and Bill Splitter.
- When you want the GST out of a shop price, use the Discount Calculator.
- When you are a visitor planning costs, use the Tourism New Zealand guide to currency and costs.
Questions about the tip calculator
Should I tip in New Zealand?
Tourism New Zealand says tipping is not obligatory, even in restaurants and bars. A tip for good service or kindness is your choice.
Why does the calculator start at 0%?
Because no tip is the normal outcome. The total equals the bill until you pick a button or move the slider.
Is a service charge added to New Zealand bills?
No. Hotels and restaurants leave service charges off, so the total is the price plus whatever tip you add.
How is GST handled?
GST is 15% and included in prices. On $115.00 the GST is $15.00, and entering it makes a 10% tip $10.00 rather than $11.50.
What percentages should I use?
There is no official figure. The buttons at 5%, 10% and 15% are only a guide, and the slider goes up to 20%.
