# Work Hours Calculator

In New Zealand, employment agreements set weekly hours, normally no more than 40, and the law does not require an overtime premium. This calculator adds up a week of start, finish and break times, pays every hour at your base rate in dollars, and lets you add an agreed multiplier if your agreement has one.

## New Zealand rules and figures

- Employment agreements in New Zealand must set weekly hours of no more than 40 unless the employer and employee agree otherwise.
- New Zealand sets no legal overtime premium, so any overtime rate is whatever the employment agreement says.
- Hours of work must be agreed in a written employment agreement.
- Work on a public holiday carries a legal premium of time and a half.

## How the Work Hours Calculator works

Each day's net time is the finish less the start less the unpaid break. A finish earlier than the start is treated as the next day. The overtime rule opens on no premium, which is how the law leaves it.

Formula: `net minutes = (out − in, +24 h if out < in) − break; pay = regular × rate + overtime × rate × agreed multiplier`

- The sheet opens with weekdays at 09:00 to 17:30 and a 30-minute break, 40 hours in total, which lines up with the usual ceiling for agreed weekly hours.
- There is no legal overtime premium to default to, so the rule starts at No overtime premium. Pick a weekly rule to apply a multiplier that your own agreement sets.
- The note on the pay tab mentions the legal premium of time and a half for work on a public holiday. The tool has no public-holiday setting, so apply that by hand.
- The target opens at 40 hours a week, and the plus or minus figure on the week tab compares your total with it.
- The currency symbol starts as $, and your timesheet and edits stay in your browser.

## How to use the Work Hours Calculator

1. **Record each day.** Type a start, a finish and an unpaid break for each day you worked.
2. **Enter your hourly rate.** On the pay tab enter your hourly rate in dollars. Hours are paid at that rate while the rule is set to no premium.
3. **Apply an agreed overtime rate.** If your agreement pays more after a number of hours, pick a weekly rule, set the threshold and type the multiplier.
4. **Compare with agreed hours.** Set the target to the weekly hours in your agreement and read how far the week is over or under.
5. **Check a one-off shift.** Use the shift tab for a single night or odd shift.

## Example: A 45-hour week at $30 an hour

Take five days of 08:00 to 17:30 with half an hour unpaid. That leaves 9 hours a day and 45 for the week. Under the legal default of no premium, gross pay is 45 × $30 = $1,350.00. Now imagine the agreement promises time and a half beyond 40 hours. Select the weekly rule, enter 40 and 1.5, and the result is $1,200.00 for the first 40 hours and $225.00 for the other 5, so $1,425.00 in all.

## When to use the Work Hours Calculator

- **Checking a pay slip.** Enter the week as worked and compare the regular and extra hours with what you were paid.
- **Costing agreed overtime.** Choose a weekly rule and the multiplier from your agreement.
- **Shifts that cross midnight.** Type real start and finish times; the tool adds the day change.
- **Planning against 40 hours.** Use the week total against the target to see whether a roster fits.

## What the Work Hours Calculator does not do

- Pay is gross, before PAYE, ACC and KiwiSaver deductions.
- Public-holiday time and a half, alternative holidays and leave are not applied.
- The weekly rule is a single threshold and multiplier, so tiered agreements are approximated.
- The tool cannot read your employment agreement, which decides any overtime rate.
- The single shift tab pays net hours at the base rate with no overtime.
- Rounding rules set by an employer are not modelled.

- **When your agreement states its own overtime terms**, use the written employment agreement.

## Questions about the Work Hours Calculator

### Do employers have to pay overtime in New Zealand?

There is no legal overtime premium. Any extra rate comes from the employment agreement, which is why this tool starts with none.

### How many hours can an agreement set?

Weekly hours of no more than 40, unless the employer and employee agree otherwise, and they must be in a written agreement.

### How do I model a public holiday at time and a half?

The tool has no holiday setting. Enter that day's hours separately and apply the 1.5 multiplier by hand to the hourly rate.

### What if my shift ends after midnight?

Enter the real times, like 22:00 and 06:00. When the finish comes before the start, the tool treats it as the following day, so you get 8 hours before the break.

### Is my data kept online?

No. The timesheet is saved in this browser on your device. Export a CSV if you need a copy.
