# Currency Converter

A British traveller or online shopper usually wants to know what a pound is worth in dollars. This converter opens with pounds as the From currency and US dollars as the To currency, fetches daily rates when the page loads, and says plainly when it has fallen back to a stored table.

## United Kingdom rules and figures

- Visitors from Britain see the pound selected first, with the US dollar as the target.
- A stored table gives 0.79 pounds to the US dollar, dated early 2024, and serves only when daily rates fail to load.
- A UK price tag includes VAT, so converting it carries the tax along unchanged.
- The VAT inside a UK price follows the goods: 20%, 5% or nothing.

## How the currency converter works

Each currency is stored as units per US dollar, and any pair is worked out through the dollar. Pounds to dollars divides the amount by the pound figure, since the dollar figure is 1.

Formula: `USD = GBP amount ÷ GBP per USD; exchange rate = 1 ÷ GBP per USD`

- On a UK page the From box starts as GBP and the To box as USD, until you choose a currency yourself.
- The badge reads Daily rates when the fetch worked and Built-in table (early 2024) when it failed, and a message names the table.
- The stored table has 0.79 pounds to the dollar, so the fallback result for 250.00 GBP is 316.46 USD, not today's rate.
- Quick Conversions lists eight preset amounts, from 1 to 1000, converted at the same rate.
- The Refresh button and the Auto-refresh rates switch fetch again from the sources.

## How to use the currency converter

1. **Enter an amount.** Type the amount in the Amount box. The default is 100, and the Quick Conversions grid lists eight preset amounts for the same pair.
2. **Choose the currencies.** Pick the From and To currencies from the menus; use the arrow button between them to swap the pair. Until you pick, From is your country's currency.
3. **Read the result.** The Conversion Result card shows the converted amount, the exchange rate and its inverse. The Copy button puts the line on the clipboard; the line under the card shows when the rates were updated.
4. **Keep or compare pairs.** Add to History records the conversion, Add to Favorites keeps the pair, and the Compare tab lists every currency's rate against USD.
5. **Do arithmetic first.** On the Calculator tab, use the keypad, then press Use in Converter to send the result to the Amount box.

## Example: 250.00 GBP to US dollars on the built-in table

This uses the stored fallback table, not a current rate. It has 0.79 pounds per dollar, so 250.00 GBP divided by 0.79 gives 316.46 USD. The Exchange Rate line reads 1 GBP = 1.265823 USD and the Inverse Rate reads 1 USD = 0.790000 GBP. On the day you use it the page shows the provider's own figures instead, so your result will differ.

## When to use the currency converter

- **Pricing a US online purchase.** Switch the pair to USD and GBP, type the dollar price and read the sterling amount before checkout.
- **Planning spending on a trip to the US.** Convert a daily budget in pounds and read the Quick Conversions grid for round amounts.
- **Checking a UK price for an overseas friend.** Type the sterling price and read it in dollars, remembering VAT is already inside.
- **Comparing two foreign prices.** Convert each into pounds with the swap button and compare them.

## What the currency converter does not do

- The rates are daily mid-market figures, so a card or bank will charge a different rate and often a fee.
- If the rates cannot load, the tool uses a table from early 2024, in which a pound is worth more dollars than recent rates.
- Only 14 currencies and two cryptocurrencies are included.
- The tool does not convert VAT or add it to a price.
- Export Data saves history, favourites and settings but not the rate table.

## When something else is a better fit

- **When you are sending money abroad**, use the quote from your bank or transfer provider, which includes their fee.
- **When you are converting prices as a traveller**, use the [Travel Currency Converter](https://aumnitools.com/tool/travel-currency-converter.md).
- **When you want to know what a conversion fee costs**, use the [Percentage Calculator](https://aumnitools.com/tool/percentage-calculator.md).

## Questions about the currency converter

### Which currencies does the UK page open with?

Pounds sterling as From and US dollars as To. Pick another currency in either menu and your choice stays for the visit.

### What if the page cannot load today's rates?

It shows an error message and switches to a built-in table from early 2024, labelled Built-in table in the badge and again under the result.

### How is pounds to dollars worked out?

The amount is divided by the stored pound figure per dollar. With the table's 0.79, 250.00 GBP gives 316.46 USD.

### Is the rate the same as my bank's?

No. The page shows a daily mid-market rate, and card and bank rates include their own margin.

### Does a converted price include VAT?

Yes if it was a UK shelf price, because VAT is included in those prices. The converter does not change the tax.
