    United Kingdom rules and figures

    • Each Met Office season begins on the 1st of March, June, September or December.
    • In the UK tool, Winter is December to February and Spring is March to May.
    • Summer covers June to August and Autumn covers September to November, matching the Met Office months.

How the seasonal activity suggestions tool works

Each idea is a fixed record with seasons, an indoor or outdoor tag, who it suits, a cost band and a length in minutes. A season button keeps ideas tagged with it or with any season, and the other filters narrow what is left.

    • Fourteen ideas carry the any-season tag, so Spring shows 21 ideas, Summer 23, Autumn 21 and Winter 24 before other filters.
    • The length filter keeps ideas of at most 45, 90 or 180 minutes. Cost is Free, Cheap or Costs something, and only one idea sits in the top band.
    • Shuffle moves a counter that seeds the order, so a reload shows the same order again. The first three results are large cards.
    • The Southern switch starts off for the UK. Saved hearts and ticked-off ideas are stored in this browser.

How to use the seasonal activity suggestions tool

    1. Choose a season. Press Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. The button for the current Met Office season is selected when the page loads.
    2. Set the conditions. Pick indoors or outdoors, who is coming and a cost band from the three drop-downs.
    3. Limit the time. Cap the length at 45 minutes, 90 minutes or 3 hours when the evening is short.
    4. Shuffle and save. Press Shuffle for a new order and use the heart to save an idea. The Saved tab counts them.
    5. Copy the short list. Copy list writes the saved titles as plain text for a message.

Example: A short free winter evening in the UK

With Winter chosen, Free as the cost and Under 45 min as the length, six of the 24 Winter ideas remain. They are a night walk in frost with no wind (45 minutes), looking at the winter constellations (40), getting outside within an hour of waking (20), learning five local birds or trees (45), phoning someone you have been meaning to ring (30) and a walk with no destination or phone (45).

When to use the seasonal activity suggestions tool

    • Choosing a Sunday in October. Open Autumn, set Outdoors and press Shuffle to see walks, foraging and preserving ideas.
    • Entertaining children in summer. Pick Summer, Outdoors, With children and Under 90 min to see a meal outside and a bird or tree walk.
    • A cheap January weekend. Select Winter and Free, then read the indoor ideas such as planning the year ahead.
    • Keeping a list for the month. Save three ideas, tick them off as you go and copy the list for whoever is joining you.

What the seasonal activity suggestions tool does not do

    • The 40 ideas are written into the page. They hold no events, venues, opening times or weather checks.
    • Cost is three bands without money amounts, and a duration appears only as a badge on each card.
    • Notes such as the dawn chorus window of late April to early June and the August Perseids are written in northern-calendar months.
    • Saved and done lists live in this browser on this device only.

When something else is a better fit

    • When you want household jobs for the season, not things to enjoy, use the Seasonal Checklist.
    • When you want to know when the moon is full for a night out, use the Moon Phase Calendar.
    • When you need events or tickets near you, use your council's events page or a local listings site.

Questions about the seasonal activity suggestions tool

Which season does the page open on in the UK?

The one holding today's month by the Met Office calendar: Winter for December to February, Spring for March to May, Summer for June to August and Autumn for September to November.

Why do I see so few ideas with several filters?

Filters stack, so each one removes ideas. Winter, Indoors, On your own, Free and Under 90 min together leave only 2 of the 40. Loosen the length first.

    Is Shuffle random?

It is a seeded shuffle. A counter sets the order, so reloading shows the same order, and each press of Shuffle moves the counter on.

Which ideas have a safety note?

Outdoor swimming says to check the water quality and the exit point, and foraging says to eat nothing you cannot identify with complete certainty.

Where are my saved ideas kept?

In this browser's local storage, by idea title, with the done ticks. Another device or cleared site data starts empty.
