Tip and Bill Splitter
🇬🇧 United Kingdom version
When four friends eat out in Britain, one person usually pays and everyone else transfers their share. This splitter starts the tip at 10%, divides bill, tip and total by the head count in pounds, and compares the three buttons side by side. If your bill has an optional service charge, you can set the tip to 0%.

Tipping in United Kingdom
An optional service charge is sometimes added to the bill and noted on it. You can choose whether to pay it.
- Tipping is not expected, but 10-15% is well received if no service charge was added (VisitBritain).
- Under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, employers must pass all tips on to workers without deductions.
- The tips law and its code of practice have applied since 1 October 2024 in England, Scotland and Wales.

United Kingdom rules and figures
- Some restaurants print an optional service charge on the bill, and paying it is your decision.
- VisitBritain describes 10-15% as welcome where no service charge has been added, though tipping is not expected.
- A 2023 Act, the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act, makes employers hand every tip to workers, with no deductions.
- England, Scotland and Wales have enforced that law, with a code of practice, from 1 October 2024.
- Because menu prices include VAT, this page needs no tax box.

How the Tip and Bill Splitter works
Each share is the bill plus the tip, divided by the number of people. The tip is a percentage of the whole bill you type, because this page has no tax box.
each pays = (£148.00 + £148.00 × 10% ) ÷ 4 = £40.70
- The buttons are 5% Standard, 10% Good Service and 15% Great Service, and the slider runs from 0% to 20%.
- Under 5% the badge reads Little or No Tip; from 5% to 9% it reads Standard; Good starts at 10%, Great at 15% and Excellent at 20%.
- The Tip Comparison on the Breakdown tab lists the same three buttons, each with the table total and the tip it adds.
- The shares are shown to the penny without any rounding rule, so a seven-way split can differ from the total by a penny or two.
- The Guide tab has a Tipping in United Kingdom note with the optional service charge wording and the tips law.
How to use the Tip and Bill Splitter
- Type what the bill came to. Enter the figure from the receipt, such as £148.00. Results appear once it is above zero.
- Count the people paying. Press the plus or minus button until the counter matches the diners who are splitting.
- Read and send the share. The Breakdown tab shows each person's bill, tip and total. Copy Total or Copy Summary puts the figures on the clipboard for the group chat.
Example: £148.00 for 4 people at 10%
Starting from 10%, the tip comes to £14.80 and the table pays £162.80. A diner's share is £37.00 of food plus £3.70 of tip, £40.70 in all. Drop to 5% and the table pays £155.40 (£38.85 a head); go up to 15% and it pays £170.20 (£42.55 a head).
When to use the Tip and Bill Splitter
- Paying for the table and collecting later. Read the Each person pays figure and send it to the others before you tap your card.
- Agreeing a tip with friends. Show the three totals so the group can pick between 5%, 10% and 15% without arguing.
- Handling an added service charge. Drop the slider to 0% when a service charge is already on the bill and split the plain total.
- Sharing a taxi. Enter the fare, choose a small tip and divide it among the passengers.
What the Tip and Bill Splitter does not do
- Every person pays the same, so a diner who ordered less still carries an equal share.
- The tip is worked out on the full bill, because there is no field for tax or an itemised charge.
- Shares are displayed to the penny without a rounding rule, so they may not add up exactly to the total.
- No money is moved: the tool only does the arithmetic.
- Reset Calculator returns the tip to 10% and clears the bill.
When something else is a better fit
- When diners ordered very different amounts, use the Tip Calculator, whose Custom Split shares the total by amount entered.
- When you would rather settle by transfer, use your banking app, which can request money from each person.
Questions about the Tip and Bill Splitter
Should a UK group tip if a service charge is on the bill?
Paying the printed service charge is optional. If the group does pay it, a further tip is a separate choice.
How is a four-way split worked out?
The bill and tip are added, then divided by four. On £148.00 at 10% the total is £162.80, so each person pays £40.70.
What does the Great Service badge cover?
It labels tips from 15% to 19%. Standard covers 5-9%, Good 10-14%, and 20% reads as Excellent.
Where do the tips go?
Employers must pass all tips to workers without deductions under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, with a code of practice in force since 1 October 2024.
Does the split include VAT?
Yes. Menu prices already include VAT, so the figure on the bill is the amount shared, and the tip percentage is applied to it.
